    Dear Leads in Utah,

I have recently been talking to some of my fellow follows and we have a request:

    PLEASE LEARN BALBOA!!!!!

It is a great dance. Many of us girls enjoy it. It is NOT a lazy way to fast dance. It is just as historical as the Lindy Hop. It can be amazing if you give it a try. You will be a better, well-rounded dancer if you learn it and actually implement it every once in a while.

    Thank you,
    Michelle

P.S. Please let me know if anyone agrees or disagrees.

I have a hard time learning bal I really have tried twice but I just felt as though the lessons moved very slow and as though I was doing a very lazey dance. At this point I have no interest in bal and dont see my interest being tuned into bal any time soon . I know Vos wants to learn Bal so if you want someone who is interested Id talk to him

it's just about the same age as the lindy hop.

that's interesting. i've never heard it called a lazy dance before. what's the reasoning?

check out Peter's vids for some great examples of bal.

Willie Desatoff & Ann Mills, Hal & Marge Takier Balboa

Born in the 1930's in Southern California, on Balboa Peninsula at the Pavillion and soon after, the Rendevous Ballroom. The Balboa is known for it fast footwork, style and "chest to chest" close dancing position. It was said you were not allowed to break-away (from "chest to chest"[Emoticon not found] and the Balboa dancers were the ones who dressed up and didn't want to sweat. So you had your Balboa dancers on one side of the ballroom and the crazed Lindy/Swing dancers on the other. Soon the Balboa-Swing came along, which used the same basics as Balboa but added the spins, drops, turns... of swing dancing. The term, Balboa-Swing, didn't actually come around till much later. But, this increased energy level was made famous by "Ray Rand Swingers" of Southern California. The Bal- and Bal-Swing is well suited for fast tempos, though it was said a good Balboa dancer could Balboa at any tempo.

OK ill be a little more clear for you! I thought it a lazey dance but ill go over it again. Now it may be because I have not been taught well or was just in a class that was moving far to slow but I felt lazey doing bal because the music was moving fairly quick but I didnt feel like I was exerting much energy. thus the lazey feeling. also this is coming from someone who loves blues and slow dancing. When I do blues I feel as though every muscle in my body is being used sometimes all at once. when I have done bal what little I have done I missed the exertion of energy maybe I needed faster music maybe a better teacher or partner but what I have learned made me loose interest very fast.
