call for opinions. this new forum has a bunch of cool features, and it works a little differently than the last.
i think most of the changes are for the best, but you may not agree with me. since i'm a benevolent dictator, i'd like to hear what you think. so play with this forum for a bit. tell me what you like, what you don't.
in particular:
(i'll add more questions as i think of them)
I've found some utility in being able to edit old posts. I'm thinking specifically of the post I used in the "Presidency" section to track who I had gotten letters from. Speaking of which, is that section still around? I can't it anymore. Or the team sections, for that matter. And, while I'm not actively doing much as part of the swing council anymore, I did have some handy links in the team section that I hope aren't lost.
There is something to be said for demanding that a post eventually settle down and decide what it says. I think that if each poster were able to edit their two most recent posts in every thread, that would be sufficient for almost all non-nefarious purposes.
Other changes on the new forum I've noticed:
It doesn't look like you can make polls. Eh, good riddance.
I don't see the comprehensive list of members anywhere any more. That came in handy sometimes.
There's no little button to easily size the text. Yeah, sometimes it gets abused. Usually, we're pretty good, though. I suppose silly asides can be made in subscript.
The comment editor automatically turns linebreaks into paragraph breaks. That could cause formatting trouble if I want to share beautiful poetry with y'all.
Edit: apparently, it only does that in preview mode, and does things the regular way when you finalize your post. Strange.
Are you using Firefox Foehg? I've noticed Firefox and WYSIWYG don't always play nice.
Hm... editing posts. It seems like the only reason you would want to edit post (non-nefariously) is in the situation Foehg described, which seems like a wiki would be better suited for the task. Otherwise, I would say no editing posts after a day? Maybe even an hour.
No polls? That would also mean no workshop ratings, which I think would be a loss, as they seemed pretty helpful/informative.
That's all I can think of for now.
i like the idea being able to edit all of my posts. the only time i have edited a really old post was when i got a phone call from a dancer who didn't have my number, who said that she got my number off the forums. so it was nice to be able to find that old post and delete my number.
as far as sticky discussions go, i'd prefer them to be at the top of their category page so i don't have to scroll through a ton of discussions that may or may not have new posts.
I think they'll do that if you bookmark them. Just not for everybody automatically. Maybe they could have their own discussion filter over on the left, eh, Bob?

they already do what she says (they're at the top of their category page, but not at the top of the discussions page... see the recurring events category).
discussions also do magical things when you bookmark them [Emoticon not found]
k, i feel stupid. how do you bookmark stuff?
it's one of the links on the left. under options.
yeah. i thought it was that easy.
and also, anything that linked to the old swingkids forum is now broken. [Emoticon not found]

sorry. not much i can do about that.
I like what you've done with the place. Don't change anything, it's great. (Do you ever get sick of hearing that? I do.)
