welcome to the new forum. sorry about the short notice about switching over.

it turns out that i broke the old one. i lost a week or so worth of posts in the process. i don't think any of you said much important recently, but if you did, feel free to repost them.

    questions, comments, concerns?

there is, but it doesn't work so i turned it back off.

no use having a button that doesn't do what it claims.

edit: it looks like they updated the module, so there's now a "mark all read" link... it looks like it also marked every thread as read for every user, just for good measure.

Hey, it looks like our old PMs are gone. If you were really bored or it was really easy, you could convert our old in/out boxes to whispered threads on the new forums.

i actually thought about it/looked into it. it turns out it's not all that easy.

  1.

And bob doesn't have time to be bored. But I have a question. When I go look at threads that have new posts, I go back to the main page, which tells me those threads still have new posts. o_O Why is that?

i'm not sure :S.... it seems to go away once you respond to the discussion. and it might go away next time you come to the site. it definitely goes away if you click "mark all read"

It would still be nice to have a red new next to each post that has been added since your last visit. Especially when people practice necromancy.

Um, I don't really see how that would help. I mean, it already gets highlighted. Why bother putting a red thing by it?

By the time I look at the tab I've opened in the background, new posts are NOT highlighted. They are just as gray as any other post, and impossible to tell apart from the posts I saw last time.

    New complaint:

in Firefox, at least, it scrolls you straight to the unread comments, but if you're in the video thread, it expands the videos after it's taken you there, so you end up stranded in the middle of the thread.

that has to do with how firefox chose to deal with scrolling to a url fragment (the part with #) before all the page content has loaded and stabilized. if you want to join the firefox dev team, you could prob'ly make change that. until then, i suggest you just deal.

but if you want an easy answer, you can turn off the scrolling automatically to the last post you've seen... then you could manually scroll down there yourself.

It started doing that to me, and then I went to my profile page and reset comment read-ness status, or whatever the other thing is there. It fixed it.

Oh, oops. I was thinking about traci's previous complaint that stuff doesn't get marked as read. This new one with Ron squatting on the posts hasn't happened to me, as far as I can recall.

Looks like it didn't. My whisper just got splodged on to the end of my other comment. [Emoticon not found].

looking at the guts of this forum software, if whispering would bump a thread it would only do so for you, not for everyone else... so you'd be pretty stoked that your thread was at the top of the list, but all the rest of us would see it exactly where it used to be.

i've disabled the extension responsible for the mess. you should now be able to bump threads, and your whispers won't get tacked on the end of existing threads.

a side effect of this is that you can multipost. not sure how i feel about this, but i had to disable multipost protection to keep the whispers from getting globbed onto the end of existing posts. i'll contact the guy in charge of this chunk of code, see if he can fix it...

The thing I would hope is that it would just bump it for the person I was whispering to. Which I bet it does. Just not if it's getting glommed on to the end of the previous post.

Only inasmuch as I mentioned above, which you might not have noticed, because of how threads were behaving at the time:

    Foehg:

in Firefox, at least, it scrolls you straight to the unread comments, but if you're in the video thread, it expands the videos after it's taken you there, so you end up stranded in the middle of the thread.

Just tried it out in Internet Explorer for good measure. Internet Explorer inlines a few clips, but many fewer than firefox does, and seems to scroll to the right place. Also, it shows Ron squatting all over the page, though it's even funnier to see Zach and Holly (or whoever that is) splatted all over the "Welcome, Guest!" message.

i don't test things in IE nearly as much as i used to, due to an acute lack of any computer that natively runs IE... maybe i should check this one out.... i thought for sure i'd looked at it in IE at least.

any particular thread that does it, or is the whole site like that?

I'm pretty sure the whole site had swing kids plastered all over the masthead, obscuring the "discussions" link and other fun stuff like that.

The dance clips thread also didn't seem to be inlining youtube videos... but maybe that's just because I'm using on-campus internet feed.

that's exactly why... on campus you only see the google video links inlined.

  2.

so the pictures are still covering the tope part of the pages... like I can't read the complete title of the first thread on any page.... still... this is on IE and on my sidekick... come on bobthecow. hehe
