It is with great excitement that I would like to announce a new competition in the state of Texas!
Lone Star Championships
January 25-27th, 2008
Austin, Texas
Created by Tena Morales of Houston, Scott Angelius of Austin, and Don West of Dallas, are creating an annual competition focused on fun and improvisation (aka Social Dance Competitions). This competition is for all that would like to compete in a fun and relaxed environment and those who enjoy watching creative competition... and dancing all weekend!
This is a social event. Not only for the social dancing, but the competitions are social dance competitions - Jack and Jills and Strictlys only. Between that and some extra special classes, guests, and surprises... think of this as an exchange... on steroids.
Registration will be just $65 for those early birds out there - and registration is opening soon... so save the date!
We also appreciate you passing the word!
That's the same weekend as ULX.....hmmmmm................
Don't people look at calendars when they plan events?
or at least when they advertise.... heh
We did.
There are a few event calendars out there. I know we definitely looked at them months ago when the ULX date was set.
It really wouldn't be that hard for these Texas guys to look at one. According to this one the second weekend of January and the first weekend of February are wide open.
Actually, it's getting pretty near impossible to schedule an event that doesn't conflict with another one. The lindyexchange.com calendar has a lot, but not everything (blues and local events are mostly not on that calendar). The best thing organizers can do is try to pick dates where they think they can get the most people.
M'shimmy:We did.
But are we refraining from advertising on forums if we know that there is a conflict? (I think that is what some people are bugged about here.) For example, are we not advertising in Atlanta because we know that Enter the Blues is the same weekend as ULX?
And if so, will we not advertise in Austin, since we know the Lone Star Showdown is that weekend? [Emoticon not found]

I know of a few people coming to ULX from Austin...
I certainly left a couple dozen ULX cards in Austin a couple of weeks ago
There is also an event that weekend put on by the Phoenix swing scene. It's a swing cruise to Mexico. They've been trying to get me in on it since June.
Registration for Lone Star Championships is now OPEN! Come and get it! Tons of social dancing (of course! it's Austin!)... social competitions galore... some special classes... and more!
The extra-early bird rate is just $65 from now until the 25th (merry Christmas) - tell your friends quick before it increases!
We can't wait to see you in Austin on Jan 25-27th!
Wow. Do you think he even read the other posts in this thread?
PS - And did anybody think "Wow... Scotty had a baby?!?" when they saw the username?
Probably not. Like on that other thread, though, I don't particularly blame him. Sometimes you're in a hurry. [Emoticon not found]
Well I for one am going to Austin.. I can never turn down a good ol' fashioned Championship Competition.. so sorry folks but Texas wins
He may have read it and still posted. I don't blame him either. Just because a few people would oppose the event doesn't mean it's worthless to advertise further. You never know who would be interested among the less vocal. I'm tempted to go out to Texas myself. It's nice and warm there.
I was not implying that he should not have posted it. What I was implying, is that if he had read the thread, he probably should have addressed the concern of why they had planned (and advertised) for an event during the ULX weekend. Some justification or reasoning perhaps?

So... if you win, can we call you Lonestar? And if so, who will be the first person to get the raspberry?

i don't understand why he would need to justify planning their event during our weekend. it's not like we called "dibs" or something. (or if we did, maybe we didn't yell loud enough?) what if we're the ones that planned something on their weekend?

Ah! I get it. Thanks for the clarification. I was a little confused. It's all good. [Emoticon not found]

It's not that he needs to justify planning his event on the same weekend in general, it's more that given the fact that it is on the same weekend, advertising and saying that we should go to his event rather than ours seems like it could use some justification/explanation. We're not advertising on his forum saying that he should go to our event to the exclusion of his, so that is why we owe no explanation.
I think we should take this up with the swing Jedi council

And we did call "dibs" in a way. If you look around at the somewhat "official" calendars, you will see ULX posted there clear as day. And we posted that before anybody else had.
Plus the other valid point that the fur ball brought up.
Hey guys. I didn't really want to step on any toes. I know it's kind of a touchy thing with posting on another scenes forum when they have a conflicting event. But they way I see it, one is a competition and one is an exchange. There is a different audience there. I know a couple of the people going up for ULX and they just wanted to dance, not compete. So, i really wasn't trying to stir anything up. Please let me know if you have a serious problem with the posts.
As for "babyscott"...i'm the younger of two Scotts in the austin scene. Go figure.
And now...
Hey all,
The schedule for Lone Star Championships is up! It is tentative, but should give you a good idea of what the event will be like: http://www.lonestarchampionships.com/schedule.html
There will be over 20 hours of dancing - not including workshops or competitions. Giant City Sextet plays Saturday night and will knock your socks off, along side our amazing DJs from Austin and around the country.
We would also like to announce that Dan and Tiff from Denver will be teaching workshop classes on Saturday and Sunday! Dan and Tiff have won a ridiculous amount of competitions, run the nationally recognized troupe 23 Skidoo, and teach around the country. We are excited to bring them to Austin!
Already we have dancers coming from all over Texas, Denver CO, Tampa FL, Chicago IL, Atlanta GA, Las Vegas NV, and Washington DC. This is going to be an awesome party!
Only one week left at the extra-early bird rate: $65!

Alas, I am pacified.
