Hey, first a shout out to Hot Chocolate for his awesome DJing last night! (I have a sneaky suspicion that he's actually usually that awesome, but I just now noticed. Kudos anyway.)

And now a question for HC (or anyone who can answer it): What was that one song you played? (You know, that one song?)

Okay, I don't have a lot to go on, but here goes: A male vocalist sang short, disjointed lyrics that I couldn't for the life of me make out, with the possible stipulation that they might have been names of foods, because I'm pretty sure I heard "shish kebab" in there a few times, fairly distinctly. If I had to guess at a title, it would probably be the same as the first line, which was something with three syllables (most likely three one-syllable words) the first of which had a long "I" sound. The second and third had what sounded like short front vowels, and may have began with "s" sounds, or something like them.

What a mess. Anybody have any idea what I'm talking about?

I wasn't there, but your description sounds kind of like "Yep Roc Heresay" by Slim Gaillard. In the song, he reads the menu from a Middle Eastern restaurant. Most of it is "nonsense" to us English speakers. I seem to recall hearing him say "shish-kebab" or something like that...

I could be wrong. Maybe it's Go Daddy-O!

Good tries, good tries! Special thanks to Buzz for getting the ball rolling, and to the Cap'n for providing the vital clue.

I searched for Yep Roc Heresay, and found a cover on youtube... that sounded not much like what I was looking for. But I said to myself, "You know, as little as I know about Slim Gaillard, the song sounded substantially more like Slim Gaillard than like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy".

Reviewing a brief discography of Slim's, I discovered "Drei Six Cents", and became convinced that this must be the one I was thinking of. I haven't heard it yet to confirm, but the phonetics are just all right there, you know? The front vowels, the sibilants...

it's all comin' together. [Emoticon not found]

  1.

You are correct!! Dri Six Cents it is.. By The Slim Gaillard Quartette It's from the 4 disc collection titled
Laughing in Rhythm- Disc number 3-(Cement Mixer Put-ti Put-ti)

Thanks for the compliment. I enjoy Dj'ing a lot more this year then in years past. I hope to be out more often.

  2.

How how I do loves me some Slim Gaillard.

    Um, you forgot the playlist.

perhaps he's making a point about how a dj doesn't plan in advance everything he's going to play, but instead reads the floor, and the attitude of the dancers, and the atmosphere in the room to select the best possible sequence of songs to keep the room swingin'. hence, he didn't have a playlist.

or maybe he just forgot to post it.

Ah, but I bet he could make the playlist as he goes so he knows what he's already played. The playlist would actually be a playedlist.

The motion has been made and seconded. All in favor?

  7.

I am, but I guess I already seconded the motion so it doesn't really help for me to be in favor again?

  8.

I can! But my idj actually does that for me

    Ron,
Last week you played a Louis Armstrong medley of "Shadrack" and some other song, like "When the Saints go Marching."

    What album is that from?
    thanks.
