Ok jazz & swing lovers, check this out!

Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival 2008 has introduced a new event in their always stellar lineup. An old-fashioned big band "battle of the bands". They are throwing down a dance floor and taking the roof off the Kibbie Dome creating an open-air dance!

I have attended LHIJF for many years now, always impressed with the caliber of artists that play, but this blew me out of the water. If you are interested in a weekend of amazing jazz, cutting edge musicians, and some incredible live music to dance to - buy your tickets now!

Some of my favorites from last year: Christian McBride, John Pizzarelli, Roberta Gambarini, Roy Hargrove, Russell Malone, Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, DeeDee Bridgewater, Freddy Cole, Claudio Roditi, James Moody, Benny Green, ... seriously, need I go on? This year we are celebrating Hamps 100th Birthday! Yeah, its gonna be a party!

Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (backs the best - Diana Krall, Jane Monheit, Christian McBride, etc.)
Lionel Hampton Big Band (the present day band representing the legend himself)

Workshops/Clinics - there are music and dance workshops offered each year, recently swing and jazz movement workshops were introduced. Spread the word and lets pack the dancers in!!! You wanna swing? Swing with the best at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest 2008.

If you want to hear me rave about the Lionel Hampton Big Band do a little search boards.swingutah.com for "Hampton" and look for Iraj and I ranting and raving about the awesome that was the Park City Jazz Festival a few years back. I had the music and dance experience of my life that night AND it was on a stinkin' ski slope. I'm just trying to say that these guys know how to swing and how to swing it HARD! Talk about solid/swingin rhythm section, high trumpets blaring it out, trombones and saxes battling like their lives depended on it, ... WOW!

Check out the Frankie Manning clip from Malcolm X for a cool clip of what Hampton used to be like.
