Since the dance we put on six months ago was such a hit, we decided to do it again... Only better... so...

Elite Hall Benefit Dance Part II:
Featuring the Larry Smith Jazz Combo
    Date: Saturday, November 3rd, 2007
    Time: 7:00pm-Midnight
Place: Elite Hall (83 West Main, Hyrum)
Cost: $10 per person or $15 per couple**
Dress: Best dressed or even Swing Formal

No workshops, no competitions, and most likely no floor shows. Just pure unadulterated dancing in Utah's Historic Elite Hall!

**We're willing to negotiate price for those who drive all the way from Provo area (or beyond).

(This time, I hope the date doesn't interfere with peoples' finals.)

Sounds awesome, but there's no way I'm driving up there by myself. Let's get some kind of a group going, eh?

  1.

Sweet!!... let's show the folks up north how hard we swing down south

If you've never experienced Hyrum, Utah's Historic Elite Hall, you haven't tasted much of Utah's swing dance heritage.

    Ha! so true...

  3.

I don't know if anyone was thinking about this, but if you wanted to come up Friday night for our club event and then stay until after the benefit dance Saturday, we could arrange housing. Just e-mail swing.usu@gmail.com

Now it's a "basketball court". Careful. Don't judge a book by it's cover. My grandpa used to dance there and at the other even bigger dance halls, which no longer exist of course, in Cache Valley during the thirties.

Way to tell it! A basketball court is a wooden floor with lines painted on it. Have you ever heard of a ROUND basketball court? It didn't start out that way. Due to a severe lack of interest in social dancing, Hyrum City ended up painting basketball court lines on their fabulously spring-loaded floor and hanging six hoops over the banisters (they are removable). Let's not let them do anything else to the historic building. As I was told by one of their council members, they are seriously considering taking out the $100k floor and turning it into a rec center.

I really want to show them that there really is interest in using the building for its intended purpose. Let's give 'em what for! Who's with me?

I think with the right people advocating for this -- such as Michael Ballam -- we could do it.

hehe all I'm saying is that this venue got talked up and down for weeks by flatfoot before my first visit up there years ago. When I got there, expecting a dance hall and ambiance, I saw a basketball court, and not a lot of people showing up the weeks we drove up there. Just want to set realistic expectations here.
It wasn't all that great on the knees, either, though I'd been told it was some special spongey floor.

  4.

Spencer... you need to stop looking at the glass half empty. If you had been in the right frame of mind, you would have seen it for what it really was. The regular numbers are around 40 people, which is small. However, when everyone comes to big events like this, the atmosphere creates itself. We can't help you if you already have low expectations. So, don't discourage anyone else.

It's a lot softer on the knees than the Wilk, KMB or the RB dance rooms. The Apollo's the only thing close to it in Utah that I know of.

Major props to SpiceyFruit for creating amazing ambience during Harlem Nights a while back. You guys know the year I'm talking about. Ah yeah. She rocks.

Note also that your shoes have an enormous effect on how a floor feels to your knees. If your shoes are too sticky, for example, all the torque will get stuck in your knee. Quick way to rough it up.

Also note that last EH Benefit dance in April, we got 140-160 people. That was even more than Harlem Nights of '07!

Secondly, I know someone who is personally acquainted with Michael Ballam. I've already (almost) got things in the works...

I spoke to my "Ballam" contact. She told me she is actually more acquainted with his wife and children, but she's willing to talk to him.

Now, the question is: Once we have him, what do we do with him?

We're almost 2 weeks away from the largest dance Cache Valley has ever had! The band is all ready to go. The floor is as shiny and bouncy as ever. Local radio stations and newspapers have been notified, posters and flyers have been made and are being passed out. All we need now is lots of people to grace the floor with rubber, leather, cloth, or suede (please, no skin).

Seriously, though, I've confirmed with Larry Smith. His band will be playing from 9:00pm to 11:00pm. We'll have some fine DJs spinning tunes from 8-9 and from 11-midnight. Lessons will be taught from 7-8pm.

*DJ schedule will be posted shortly.

Here's the schedule as it stands:

7:00-8:00pm - Lessons by local instructors
    8:00-9:00pm - DJ by Zeek
    9:00-11:00pm - Larry Smith Combo
    11:00-12:00pm - DJ by The Cap'n
12:30-??? - Customary After Dance Party at the Village Inn

Several Logan-ers agree that Zeek is of the top (if not THE top) great Swing DJs in Cache Valley. I think we're in for a treat.

I'd like to shout out some major props to the Provo, SLC, Rexburg, etc. folk who made a special effort to show up. Thanks!

As many of these events I've been to, I'd have to say this was the most fun I've had at Elite Hall in... oh.... ever. That was a kickin' swing jam, by the way. I love it when a band caters to the dancers...

Looks like this year's is 15 Nov.

    Lessons 7-8 and dancing 8-11:30.

    Live music, refreshments, prizes, etc.

With this, we are starting something new, a tradition that we hope will
catch on in future years: a very low-key team competition with other local
colleges and universities in the area. Just a little fun to allow the
teams to have the opportunity to perform in front of an exited crowd. For
the winners, we will have a cash prize, a fun trophy, as well as bragging
    rights until next year.

$10 single, $15.00 couple, $5.00 performer (team member).

Post subject: Elite Hall Benefit Dance and Team Competiton

USU Swing Club is hosting a swing dance and team competition to raise funds for much needed repairs to Elite Hall -- our beloved dance hall!

This dance and competition will be held on November 15, 2008 7:00 - 11:30 at Elite Hall, 83 West Main, Hyrum Utah.

The cost of the dance will be 10.00 for a single person, and 15 for a couple.

There will be live music provided by the Larry Smith Combo, lessons from 7:00-8:00, door Prizes, lots of refreshments, and the first annual Silver Shoe Team Competition.

The Silver Shoe Team Competition is a very low-key competition open to anyone who wants to put together a routine and have the opportunity to perform in front of a supporting audience. There will be a trophy to the team that wins, and members of teams that are going to perform get in for 6.00 instead of 10.00.

If you wish to have a team perform, please email us at swing.usu@gmail.com or call Sarah at: 435-313-1020 ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.

Its going to be an awesome night of fun, dancing, food, and friends. WE HOPE TO SEE ALL OF YOU THERE!
