I was quite dismayed to see a new version of Microsoft Office on all of the BYU computers at the beginning of the semester. I'd already gotten used to the un-userfriendly-ness of the old Office. All of my classmates had a hard enough time finding the Save As and Print functions! We had no idea that we were supposed to click that "Microsoft" button!! I thought it was just there for decoration.

Now I'm starting to find my way around. I was quite pleased to find out that "Paste Special" is easier to get to. So far, I like the way "Styles" are easier to switch around than before. But overall, I'm still very skeptical.

Stuck in BYU computer labs too often,
    Grant

Meh, it took me 10 minutes to find the stupid save function. And they should not have gotten rid of their keyboard shortcuts.

    that's what ctrl+s is for

    Buzz:

And they should not have gotten rid of their keyboard shortcuts.

most of the old keyboard shortcuts (that i use) still work, plus they have a ton of new ones, which makes it easier to keep typing without stopping to use the mouse. (alt+h should show you a lot of them)

supposedly there's some way to automagically make it save in .doc instead of .docx, but i've been too lazy to figure it out. i've gotten in the habit of always saving as .doc

my favorite feature: new excel has better filtering options.

I'm not a fan of it either. I try to send an email with an attachment to some of my students, and their computers reject the new version. It's impossible to do my job because the versions don't translate well. I'm just waiting for Microsoft to come out with a more user-friendly version...... I'm a patient woman.

i believe there is some program floating around on the intertubes that will let older versions of Office read the newer version.

Patient? Naive? If you hadn't noticed, each version gets worse, not better.

If you like the look-and-fell of the previous Office, try OpenOffice.org

I downloaded and installed it the other day. Life's good again... kind of... It isn't as smart as I'd like, but hey! It's Microsoft!

You can find the official download page here.

I've been using OpenOffice for a year now.

Still don't like it. I actually like Word and Excel.

Well, he isn't actually using Word and Excel, he just likes them. As long as he doesn't act on his sinful desires, it's okay, right?

Oh, and also as long as he doesn't encourage other people to like them.
