I have a friend that is looking for people to use his dance floors, so I have 3 questions that I'm hoping to get as much input as posible about.
1) What does everyone think about having a dance studio for swing in provo?
2) What price is the maximum amount that people would be willing to pay?
3) What is the best night of the week to have swing dances there if we decide to do them?
If everyone could get back to me ASAP I'll be able to determine if it is worthwhile for my friend, and get the wheels moving if it is posible. I'm trying to make this a large effort, I have friends at UVSC also investigating if the students there would be interested, so please let me know asap.
Thanks.
1) It sounds interesting- it can be a really difficult thing to get up and running- requires a lot of publicity and effort, but it can be done.
2) Given the fact that college students, people in Utah, and swing dancers in general are all cheap, and the fact that most of the provo/orem swing scene is generally comprised of swing dancing utah college students, I'd say that you'd have a hard time getting more than about 4 or 5 bucks from most, without a pretty special draw.
3) In my opinion, I'd say probably wednesday or thursday, leaning towards thursday. But that's just what I think. [Emoticon not found]
How big is the studio, where is it located, who would you have dj'ing, what kind of ventilation/air conditioning/fan situation does it have, who are you and who is your friend? Have you been dancing long? This looks like it was your first post. Welcome to the boards.
What Utah needs is a real dance hall atmosphere in a dance place. I don't like social dancing in places with mirrors for one. Even if this is a dance studio, you can turn it into a dance hall type place by spending a bit of money on decor, to boost the atmosphere. Lighting, floor, and music are such big factors for me. Hardwood floors are the only way to go. lighting should be more mood lighting than anything, somewhat dim and what would be cool is to have different settings and colors that one can adjust. No strobes, or flash stuff.. And definitely no flouresent bulbs. For music, please get DJs that know their stuff. I mean if its a swing dance, play swing.. Wether it be east coast, west coast, boogie, jump blues, be bop, rn b or lindy. But don't get wedding djs most of them don't really have a lot of good swing music. I would be all for supporting this venue and helping out in anyway
I believe our friend here is eric. He's tall, was on team last year and has been responsible for taking care of the KMB.
Yep, that's the Eric.
1) Could be cool, but like has been stated, would require a lot of work/publicity.
2) I think $5 would be your maximum. You have to remember the dollar movie mentality of Provorem college (and non-college) kids.
3) I would think Wednesday. No lessons, no other swing dances going on. The problem here is that if you want "non-hardcore" dancers, your best bet would be Friday. But if it's on Friday, most of the "hardcores" would probably go to the Skillet. However, if you have it on Wednesdays, you'll get more of the "hardcores" but probably less of the "just-here-for-a-date-to-try-and-impress-this-girl-with-my-(non-existant)-dance-skills" crowd.
I think it would be great to have a new dance studio
I agree $5 would be the limit for dancing. I think Wednesday or Thursday would be the night to have it. Friday would be alright but of course they have the golden skillet but if you made it inviting enough and way darn stinking cool then Friday might just be good.
Good music, good atomsphere, and good dancers= a good place.
There is my little tidbit.

But if it was on a Friday I doubt anyone from SLC would come down....
this is true,
I think thursday would be the best.

I'm hoping to attract a large crowd, including people from Salt Lake, so I'll talk to my friends at UVSC and see whether Wednesday or Thursday would be better for them.
I'm thinking that it would be best if we provided our own DJ's, it would make it easier on us, and that way we won't have the problems that come with someone that knows absolutely nothing about swing working the music. Other than that, there are no mirrors, it is an official dance club. It's the one that opened by Fat Cat's "Dance with me", run by Emiliano and Estela (Mexicanos).
Please keep sending ideas.
Thanks

Sorry. I didn't comment on this because I thought it was a given. I would say that this would be a requirement. Very few people outside of the swing scene could DJ a good/great swing set. And people are generally more than willing to help out.
Sounds great! Keep us posted.
I'd love to dj, if i got in free.
I think thats an awesome idea. thursday night is usually a good night, most people dont wana pay more than $5 to go dancing. Provo needs a local venue other than byu
