if you haven't heard, google just acquired grandcentral.com, which is a site that assigns you a universal phone number. basically you sign up for a number in whatever area code you want, and then you tell it where to forward your calls to (cell, work, home, etc.). and you can set up rules to direct your incoming calls. you can also screen, block, and record, along with a plethora of other features. you can even make outgoing calls, but i haven't tried that yet. basically, it's pretty sweet. and also, it's free. who doesn't love free?
anyway, since google has acquired them, they've changed it so new accounts are invite-only. i have five of them, so let me know if you want one and i'll get you the hook-up.

Does anyone know, though, how it handles long-distance? I can't find any info on the FAQ or pages about how calls are forwarded. It looks like you can forward to multiple area codes, but how does that affect the person calling the GC number?

asfik, the person calling your grand central number is charged according to your grand central area code, no matter where the calls are forwarded to. as far as long distance forwarding (from your gc number to a number you choose) there aren't any charges. in fact I believe everything is free while it is still in testing. does that answer your question?
