So if I were to drive to Austin for the Austin Blues Party, and if I were to leave on Thursday afternoon and come back on Monday (arriving in Provo Monday night/Tuesday morning), would there be anyone willing to come drive with me? The blues is July 6-8, and the total trip is July 5-9/10.

I already have one person riding with me, who's gonna be dropped in San Antonio for the duration. So two more passengers/drivers would be ideal, although I have room for three. Oh, and it would be nice if you can drive stick/can manage some freeway driving in a stick.

    How about it? Any takers?

I'm considering ABP (Austin Blues Party) or Come Rain, Come Shine in Portland. Any opinions on which would be better?

Have you been to Austin Buzz?
    I had fun there.

Just note that driving will take a really freaking long time. Or 20 hours if you're a lead footed short stops Nazi. And assuming an average gas price of $3 a gallon (stock up before you leave TX, they didn't get our last gas price spike) and 30 MPG, about $290 on gas. Which is about 1 plane ticket, most likely.

try running from Provo to Roswell in gmaps + Roswell to Austin at a total of 1330 miles over 100 more miles going through El Paso on straight interstates like gmaps suggests. I'm curious if someone can devise a faster route. But I've been on too many lonely Texas roads where the phrase 'rest stop' means a shoulder and a couple of picnic benches with 60 MPH after dark limits to seriously consider getting far off the beaten path.

Nope... only Dallas/Fort Worth. It was fun though. And the dancers there were pretty decent for the most part.

    So who's in the car?

I'd much rather conserve my vacation days and fly, since I can get a ticket for $240 and spend more time there, but I'm open to going with ya'll.

A trip to Austin wouldn't be complete without a trip to the legendary Salt Lick for real Texas barbecue. Since ya'll are stopping in San Antonio anyway maybe we could get there while they still have lunch prices and all you can eat until we explode!

You do need a barbeque experience if you go to Texas, but I can offer you a list in Austin that can live up to the Salt Lick quality. In case you didn't get the update, however, I won't be able to drive down with y'all - I'll either be in upstate New York or already in Austin. I hope you do come, though. I spoke with several of the instructors down there a few weeks ago, and I think it'll be very much worth your time. [Emoticon not found]

    SpecialK:

    So who's in the car?

Right now (as I recall...) it's me and Scott with a couple maybes... but i don't remember who they are. Bryson... and... somebody... hm. My San Antonio friend bailed, so we're probably not going to stop there.

At the moment my brain is still fried from the drive back from Portland... can I just say that Come Rain Come Shine was freakin' awesome... everyone in the world who didn't come really should have.

FYI we WILL be stopping briefly in San Antonio on the way out. Details available upon request.

I have a one way ticket to Austin on the 3rd. I'm considering riding back with ya'll, since I can't get a cheap ticket to get me back at a reasonable time Monday. We'll just have to see how this works out.
