What slogans do you think would make for a fabulous t-shirt? Here are a few of my ideas... maybe someday I'll actually make shirts out of them...
Blues is a full-contact sport.
I'd rather be bluesing.
Friends don't let friends country swing.
I'm feeling blue.
Something about "Eat. Sleep. Dance. Repeat."
Ooh! I want to contribute!
Just say "No" to triple swing
Real men lindy hop
Ballroom stance prohibited
Seems like you get so much farther by being "pro" something instead of "anti" something else.
Oh... how about... "Blues is the new black" ?
I've seen that one on Scott. It's fun.

Oh, but being "anti" is so much more fun!
sarsaparilla:Blues is a full-contact sport.
Seems like "Bal is a full-contact sport." is more fitting [Emoticon not found]

How is that more fitting?
Well see, you sweat more doing Bal (unless the Blues room is really sticky and humid) and so you will have to dry it. And when you dry shirts, they shrink, hence becoming more "fitting"

Hey, if you want some T-shirt slogans, dude, you should ask Isaac Ashby. He has hundreds...or something like that. I'll never forget that fantastic council meeting.....

Not sure what you meant by that question, but since I'm not sure how familiar you are with bal and blues, here goes a brief explanation of what I meant.
First of all, I guess it could be arguable which of the two has more contact:
or
BUT, pure balboa by definition maintains an almost constant compression based connection. Blues (ex: as seen in this clip) uses a variety of types of connection. So when I heard full-contact sport, I first thought of balboa. [Emoticon not found] Call me crazy though.
how bout slogans on tshirts like
front:
BYU Swing Kids - Swing blues bal [etc] and like unto it
back:
"pure" swing is a philosophical impossibility
Note to Grant:
BYU networks block youtube.
Yes i was sad when i could not see those clips... but i know what you mean Grant. Bal is a more contact sport.
Maybe a good slogan would be "Swing is the Ultimate Final"
P.S. it is finals week and i am kinda stressed out... that is way that came to mind.
Check out a bit of the what the historians report the old-timers have to say about balboa (warning: it has youtube videos too). It covers the purity topic as well.
[/back to your t-shirt ideas]
I posted 1000 times on the BYU Swing Kids forums . . .
. . . and all I got was this lousy t-shirt
for t-shirts, I still like
"byu swing kids - we swing our own way" - front
"because "pure" swing is a philosophical impossibility" - back
but then again that's stolen from a logan dancer's idea.
yeah grant, still, paging through long discussions is pretty boring. plus i'm a little slow on account of brain damage from last year's auto accident.
can you give us a "balboa is more of a contact sport because..."
thanks.
Whatever they say, let's put some poorly aliased gifs on them!
Oh, with a black and purple theme!!!
I would buy one!!1

Here's another classic clip many of you have already seen before. The guy talking gives a slightly authoritative (though brief) intro to the balboa (3:56). Here's a little bit more info about the narrator. I've heard the old timers still go out dancing at Bobby McGee's.

question, observation or comment...
Here Peter, a member of the advisory board for the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame, highlights what makes balboa dancers distinct. Ed and Inez maintain the aforementioned compression-based connection with small intricate footwork and thus have more constant contact with their partner than blues dancers usually do. Would anyone like to explain how blues might be considered more of a "contact sport"?
Nope. You win.
Discussion on the way home from the Skillet tonight led to:
Front-
I support theft
Back-
I steal all my dance moves
Or something like that.
...so I was just reading this, and I think I'll take a stab at the blues vs. bal "full contact" thing.
Bal is more full contact because you are physically touching your partner, through a chest connection, for the vast majority of the dance. So in the sense of which has more physical contact, balboa wins by a landslide.
Blues, however, is more full contact because if you and your partner are creative, you never quite know where the next connection point is going to be. Sure, it could be a hand/back connection, or a hand/hand connection. Or it could be a hand/elbow connection, or foreheads, or temple to temple, or he could grab my hips for a minute, or it could be a knee connection or a foot-to-booty connection, or a front compression connection, or...
And the list goes on. So in that sense, blues is incredibly full contact. Because pretty much anything is fair game.
And even IF "bal is a full-contact sport" is more true, blues just sounds better in the sentence!
Reminds me of the parody commercials.
You wouldn't steal a dance move...
You wouldn't steal a baby...
You wouldn't shoot a policeman and steal his helmet...
