How goes the battle with the BYU scheduling dragons? Did Buzz ever submit that groovy petition to President Samuelson?
I noticed we had guest services at the dance today.
Yes. The letters were submitted. I tried to give them to President Samuelson myself, but they wouldn't let me see him. No big surprise there. So I had to leave them with his secretary. But I have emailed him and asked that he confirm that he did receive the letters. I am hoping this can help get something going to make some much needed changes.
I will keep you all posted.
What approach did you use in the letter?
promises of vengeance and retribution
ElChuy:promises of vengeance and retribution
Haha, no, I used promises of swift vengeance and sore retribution.
More like trying to shed light onto the situation. I sent an email to confirm that he actually did receive the letter and got a response today. He read it and forwarded them to Vice President Scharman to deal with. I have sent her an email and am now waiting for the response.
Cool! I'm excited to have this move in a positive direction. I just had a great chat with a counselor in my bishopric. He's the advisor for the International Cinema club and had some good advice.
We really sent a petition? How did I miss this? What was in it?
Darn general conference weekend causing me to miss a dance.
SpecialK:We really sent a petition? How did I miss this? What was in it?
Ahem.
ElChuy:Nah, seems like most of it was just calculated to bring the issue to Pres. Samuelson's attention-- the issue being that scheduling is mean to us for no apparent reason. Calling upon President Samuelson to intercede on our behalf. Or something. I guess last week scheduling went so far as to deny us the KMB ballroom, and then lock it up to keep us out.promises of vengeance and retribution
No. Not just that. Salsa club actually had the KMB. That's why we couldn't get a room. However, on Friday, Campus Scheduling called up Salsa Club and told them that their dance was cancelled due to "scheduling conflicts." They then called the building manager of the KMB and told him to lock the doors.
Aparently, somebody scheduled the KMB to be locked? Or something....
Anyway, the petition was calling for an investigation into BYUSA rules and Campus Scheduling policies.
Seems like the Salsa club is starting to get the same kind of treatment that the Swing Kids have been getting for years.... it's spreading... [Emoticon not found]
The last thing BYU wants is for people to go be social and do something crazy like dancing. When would they study, do mentored research and other important things to raise the university's ranking?
What would be even worse is if BYUSSR and campus scheduling allowed students to mingle, get to know each other, and possibly get married as a result. BYU certainly doesn't want that.
I think it may be helpful if we could get a few people to send emails to the vice president our "case" has been assigned to. We want to let her know just how much good the Swing Kids Club does for its members. I don't know if I want to post her email on a public forum, but if you are willing to write a quick email, I can PM you her email address.
If necessary, I think we can ally ourselves with the Salsa Club, seeing as Eric (an active Swing Kids member and former Team dancer) is going to be in the Salsa presidency next year.
Perhaps we could throw our weight around a little better if we all worked together (and possibly scheduled our dances in adjacent ballrooms at the same time, and allow people to go back and forth, boosting overall attendance for both clubs)?
I think that could be a really good idea. The next president will definitely have to look into such an idea.
Haha. Dance clubs of BYU UNITE!!!

I'm so in support of that. I was just telling Holly how much fun we used to have at USU coordinating things and attending each other's events up there with the Salsa Club. Tell you what Salsa and Swing (jitterbug/lindy hop) are like brothers from other mothers. Plus my old friend (mindy's friend too) and hardcore amazing salsa dancer is teaching at Salsa Chocolate. Quality social dancers just need quality music and we can dance ANY NIGHT ALL NIGHT!
Vice President Scharman's secretary had called me to set up a meeting with BYUSA, Campus Scheduling, and a couple of people from SKC. That meeting was supposed to happen this Friday. However, Vice President Scharman's secretary called me again today and said that the vice president had spoken with a couple of people and instead of looking at the past and what has been done wrong, they want to start over with the new president.
I hope things go well, but as for now, it looks like this particular crusade ends here. I hope it helped. I do hope things change and Justin has much better luck with them as the new SKC Pres.
However, if things do not change, I hope somebody else can pick up where this left off and get some things changed. As for myself, I have fought the good fight...
