everyone should lindy bomb this atrocity to show them what real swing dancing is.
someone put a flier for this on my desk at work. apparently they thought that since i like swing dancing, i am also interested in seeing ballroom dancers blaspheme the very name of the dance.
I love this:
Their Lame Announcement:It’s going to everything you ever thought about swing multiplied a hundred times
and then
Their Lame Announcement:These features include “Baliwood,” a new blacklight number; “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” a quickstep choreographed by Jean Marc Generaux and France Mousseau from Canada; “Laughter in the Rain,” a foxtrot by Toni Redpath (United States American Smooth champion); and “Doo Wah Diddy,” a new fast-paced cha-cha by Paul Richardson and Olya Rodionova (United States Latin finalists).
LAME...
Speaking of swing envy, I went to see the Dance Department Senior Projects Showcase last week. Somebody's project was a giant essay with an attached presentation that traced the evolution of jazz dance and jazz-related forms in America in a sequence that looked like:
African tribal dance ->
Master Juba ->
Cakewalk ->
Charleston ->
Lindy Hop ->
Jazz-influenced forms, contemporary, lyrical, breakdance, what-have-you.
The presentation was entertaining and informative (although it wasn't Grant... [Emoticon not found] ) but the visual aids accompanying the presentation were all pretty obviously modern dancers, and not swing dancers.

Everything?
...Wow...
and one hundred times, you say? Hmmm....
Ah-ha! Maybe they multiplied it by some fraction 100 times! So it got smaller every time! Come to think of it, they probably also cross-multipled it by some crazy ballroom vector to project it into some other space...
bwahahahahahahahahahahaha- ::gasp:: -hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!
"everything you know about swing multiplied by 100 times"... featuring baliwood, a foxtrot, a quickstep, and a cha-cha?
bwahahahahahahaahahahahahahahah!

Is anyone else given the impression that the dude is wearing scrubs with saddle shoes on?
m'shimmy and i saw a commercial for this during conference. it was awful. i almost cried. too much bouncing. too many fake smiles. not real lindy hopping.
so i sent them an email telling them what i think of their "lindyhop." we'll see if there's a response.

Notice they don't have a "swing" number even mentioned. I think they do this just to spite us.
I totally agree about the costume looking like scrubs. I wonder where they get their ideas about lindyhop in the first place? [Emoticon not found]
This may go down in history as the largest perversion of swing dancing in Utah history!
I'm just glad that teams will be in Denver defending BYU's swing honor while the Ballroom team mercilessly shames the art with their nasty, bouncy, uppity, scrub-wearing, cha-cha's.
Go Cougars?!?!?!? Err, um, yeah, glad I'm gonna miss it, but someone ought to video tape it (send in a non-swinger though, 'cus we don't want to hurt anyone) so that we can burn it in some sort of quasi-pagan ritual.
I mentioned this to someone a month ago, and talked to someone last night who went (in passing, not really an opportunity to ask what they thought about it, mostly just laughing that they'd dare associate themselves with swing).
I want to throw up... all over that guys scrub outfit.
Have I mentioned yet that I want to throw up?
sick sick sick.
Lindys, jives, triple-swings
What the freak are/is "lindys"?
ugh.
*barfs everywhere*
popthestack:What the freak are/is "lindys"?
I can't decide whether it would be better or worse if it had been spelled "lindies". [Emoticon not found]
On the plus side, there's still a chance they might not use the gross green scrub outfit-- every other picture on the announcement looks like it was from the Pirates of the Carribean sections of last year's "Capture the Magic" concert, which --dare I say it? --I remember enjoying. Of course, I don't remember any ballroomized faux-swing being in it. Actually, wait, I have the program here... actually, yes. It seems there was a jive and a "Lindy".
OK, now my excuse is that I didn't start hanging with the Swing Kids until spring term, so I didn't know any better. [Emoticon not found]
I wonder if the Argentine Tango people feel the same way about the ballroom folks co-opting the tango.
On a similar, if somewhat ironic, note, I've run across traces of a lasting resentment among Viennese Waltzers that got angry when the rascally ballroomers (up to their old tricks again!) stole the waltz name, and started dancing slow waltzes.

Yeah, exactly like that. Except infinitely less cool.

Did you happen to catch the name of the person doing that project? I live down the hall from all of them but would love to finally meet some one down there with similar interests.

I have the program around here somewhere, so I should be able to find out from that, if nowhere else.
Here it is: Michelle Lapioli.
Halloween is the night when zombie threads rise to walk the forums! [Emoticon not found]
But seriously, I thought it was kind of topical: I was at the dance lab today, and the closing act for the floor show was the backup tour team dancing "the Lindy". Overall I was proud of them. It was identifiable as a lindy hop routine, as opposed to any kind of crazy jive or what-have-you.
Not that they've got anything on red team.
*ahem*
Also, the routine originally had a baseball theme, but they spiced it up a bit... turned out to be a ZOMBIE baseball lindy hop.
baseball??? Oh yeah, baseball and lindy hop totally go together. It's like peanut butter and broccoli. mmmmmmmmmmmm....
Broccoli's not too far from celery, right?
Well, even if it is, I have little (if any) room to criticize what goes together after double-timing collegiate shag footwork to "Thriller". It did make the 'monster arms' more fun, though.
come on guys lets show e. they think they're all that and are always looking down their noses at us anyway
brocoli and PB kind of like lindy hop swing and those pirate red and blue shirts performance team used to wear.
ffs let it go. this was the most irritating thread on the entire forum to begin with. that's modern avant-garde at worst: they do whatever they want and call it what they want.
execution on their part is usually a lot better than execution on OUR part, as swing performance teams, as is overall energy, not to mention dedication. encumbered by a routine or genre interpretation, SO WHAT.
please make this thread die.
if you want the thread to die, don't post in it.
And now I shall post to keep it alive.
bwahahaha
Oh, don't worry, pops. I've got it covered. [Emoticon not found]

Neither of the camera angles are great, but props to Garrett for piecing it together.

Pretty creative as far as the theme goes.
that "performance" if you want to call it that is definitely messed upped sense of swing,
kindof reminds me of salt and brusesel sprouts, they are appeakiing to some but others find them sick
Yeah, I didn't actually watch the video the whole way through, but from what I did see, I could tell that it lost a lot in the recording. I think it was easier to have fun with if you were there watching it, but if I had only seen it on the video, I wouldn't have as much to recommend it to me.
Haven't had brussels sprouts, but I'm a fan of salt. [Emoticon not found]

i disagree. they were dancing choreographed steps, with some swing and other dances included as part of that choreography. what swing they did have was pretty well-done, imo. i wouldn't necessarily call it lindy hop, but it did fall under the umbrella of "swing dancing."
Here's another similarly themed routine.
omfreakingosh, *gag* what stupid costumes this guy must be a real fool to wear such a silly outlandish costume. belongs in "zoot soot sizzle." messed up man. *gag*

yeah. he needs to get clued into the history of the lindy swing.
