    Elite Hall Benefit Dance:
Featuring the Larry Smith Jazz Combo
    Date: Saturday, April 21st, 2007
    Time: 7:00pm-Midnight
Place: Elite Hall (98 West Main, Hyrum)
Cost: $10 per person or $15 per couple
Dress: Best dressed or even Swing Formal

We'd like to make this a classy affair (best dressed, live band, etc). If you would like to volunteer your time and services, you are needed in several areas, especially advertising.

If you'd like to help, now is your opportunity. We don't want to lose such a historically significant building!

    Buzz:

So how is Elite Hall in danger of being lost?

Article posted in Logan's Herald Journal on 11/4/06:

    Charles Geraci:

HYRUM — For decades, the Elite Hall has served as a center for dancing and other social events, but the facility could soon be shut down.

The city council is considering closing the hall as the revenues raised from renting out the building do not come close to the costs of operating it.

"I just wanted you to be aware that we've got about a $15,000 deficit there," Brent Jensen, Hyrum's city administrator, told the council...

That's how we can lose it. I mean, they can't tear it down because it's a historic building, but they can keep people from holding dances in it.

Oh... I see. Too bad this is right during finals for many BYU students.

I'd like to make a formal invitation for the BYU teams to dance (I'm not going to use the word "perform" because of the possessive nature of the university) for our floor show. To help make up for the 2.5 hour commute, those teams will get in for absolutely nothing. You will also receive several VIP discount passes for friends.

Don't forget, everyone, the benefit dance is THIS Saturday. Hope to see lots of the swing community out and dressed to kill.

Ugh, I'm not going to lie I'm disgusted with the lack of support people down south have for this dance of all dances! It is Elite Hall for goodness sake! Not to mention the Larry Smith Jazz Combo!

When Elite Hall is closed for good I blame you. [Emoticon not found]

    I concur, le bon bon.

Occassionally on this forum there is talk about helping to unite the Utah Swing scene, supporting each other, recruiting more swing dancers, etc.
And here is a perfect opportunity. Yet, no one outside our northern reaches seems very excited about this.

This event has been planned for months. It's date was even set back to accommadate large events(aka ULX & HN) so more "swing" people could attend(and afford to attend). So what's the flippin' deal?
BYU couldn't "support" a cause outside themselves? SLC thinks that 90 min drive is just too tiring?

    LAME. ABSOLUTELY LAME...

We make the drive. We support the Utah Swing scene. We're up here doing our damnedest to provide top notch classes and save an authentic dance hall year in & year out, WHILE making an effort to support southern events.

It's true that the historic Elite Hall is OUR community's little gem. The Cap'n & Halls have worked VERY hard to make this happen. You think anybody could talk Larry Smith into donating his & his Combo's time? We are pushing for as much community support as we can, because it's our community that has to come to realize the rarity and importance of this building. But imagine, if you will, a dance hall alive with jivin' tunes and filled with Lindy Hoppers, young and old--a jump session on a spring loaded floor. What better inspiration to a younger generation who want to learn to dance. What better way to bring alive memories from an older generation who danced every night they could.

Why would YOU want to attend? Why the heck do you swing dance?

To anyone who bothered to come, see, and learn from Frankie Manning. To anyone who bothers to travel hundreds of miles for lessons and exchanges...

Is it really SO hard to make a little time & spend a little money to help save a slice of Utah's Swing history?

    Lame, people. Very, very, lame.

    SpecialK:

I'm torn between supporting Elite hall and checking out the BYU teams performances this Saturday night.

If you couldn't tell by the showing at the last challenge at the Skillet, there is no reason to be torn. Logan has the energy, passion and devotion that are such vital ingredients for an important, even monumental, event such as this.

Hepkat wasn't kidding about the amazingness of getting Larry Smith and his combo to go. He is one of the most respected jazz musicians to be based in Utah, let alone Logan. He has trained probably hundreds of now successful jazz musicians, knows what it's like to listen to Duke Ellington and Count Basie in person, and is so devoted to jazz history and clearly to important cultural artifacts/venues such as Elite Hall. Logan once had two dance halls much larger than Elite Hall (the Dansante and I believe the Emporium). My grandfather danced at those two and occasionally at Elite Hall.

This event is in the middle (yes, the middle) of finals, so I can't promise that I'm coming right now. Please be careful of posting things that might be generalizing about people "down south" or where ever. But some things do need to be said clearly and truthfully, so thank you for that.

Oh, and if advertising is only on the forum (nice facebook page btw!) then one could expect meager attendance. I'm always willing to help spread the word, esp. if I have something concrete like a flyer to hand out to people.

Also, thanks for carrying on the tradition in Logan.

...This event is in the middle (yes, the middle) of finals, ...

And thus Grant points out the fact that hepkat and le bon bon conveniently overlook in the headlong rant against the "people down south". While I am aware that certainly not all dancers in the "southern scene" are BYU students, certainly a significant percentage are, and while making sure this event didn't conflict with ULX and HN (one of which was, at least partially, PLANNED by Loganites) is a good idea, putting it smack dab in the middle of BYU finals is guaranteed to give a mediocre response from said students. And this is ignoring the fact that UVSC finals start the monday after as well....

I learned to swing dance at BYU. Those are the roots I know. If they'll come with me to Logan, I'll go, but if they're down in Provo, I'll probably be there too. So Troach are you going to ride up to Logan with me?

Chuy's got me. I'm not a BYU student. I've graduated.

Yep. I would not go off ranting about why people don't support you when you plan it in the middle of BYU finals. True, I'm not a student, but I'm not leaving my wife (and my team) to go up to Logan, even for a noble cause.

I would have been happy to attend had it not been planned right during the middle of finals and on the same day as the BYU closing social.

Sorry, but I anticipate poor turnout from the scene down South.

If you use Newton's method, you can usually approximate the roots to a high degree of accuracy with only a few iterations.

...wait, what were we talking about?

On a lighter note, I'd like to thank all y'all out-o'-towners who braved the Wrath of Finals and came to the EH Benefit Dance. You added a lot of spice to the occasion.

For the rest of you, oh well... there's always next time! No hard feelings. I would've done the same in your shoes.
