Ok forum dwellers.. This dance has been renamed.. And IT IS NOT THE BYU VS BYU-I. So to avoid more confusion it is no longer called The Jam.. It is The Human Dance.. Featuring music for people.. That would be most of you..we do have a few dogs out there... Chuy I'm looking in your general direction.. And a few other mutants I won't go into the trouble of mentioning but you know who you are..

Anywho "The Human Dance" is happenning this Saturday the 17th at BYU

What it is- A dance featuring some of the best Swing, Blues, and Soul music this side of the great salt lake

Who will be attending- all of you

Who will be the DJ-..... ill...let.. You.. Guess that one

And as a bonus... there will be a FREE!! Limbo Contest at 1030, with a sweet prize..

So come out and Jam... errr... I mean do "The Human Dance"
    Peace and Limbo

  2.

Thanks to all who came out to this and had so much energy on the dance floor.. The swing jam was awesome, it was cool to see everyone jam to RayCharles and then bring it way up for Basie... The Soul Train was fun.. but I heard someone got hurt.. Yikes.. well overall I had a lot of fun DJing for you guys.. it was sweet!!

Yes indeed. QUite the night. From lucky charms to stitches, we had it all.

Btw, countchocula, your old skool stuff was perfect. Play more next time [Emoticon not found]

Just curious. I was too busy dancing to notice, but I heard that not everyone danced to every song. What kept you off the floor at times? Tempo? Style?

  3.

Yeah... I never ask that question, but I am curious.. I would like some feedback. I don't ever venture in the realm of "non Lindy" music when I DJ (and I will never play this stuff when I am asked to DJ for a regular swing event).. It's usually all Lindy Swing.. so I'm curious what people thought. Is this more of what you cats like to hear at Swing Dance venues

It was pretty hot in there. And I was thirsty. And my allergies were acting up. And sometimes after a fast song I try to cool down so I don't drown my partner in sweat.

    Are those good enough reasons?

I really liked the dance I thought you did a great job of mixing things up, I think there may have been a few songs in a row that were fast tempo side of things I would have liked those broken up a little more because after two in a row that were on the fast uper tempo side I had to sit the next one or two so I didnt drench my next partner. Other then that great job I really liked the jump blues.

I have to remind myself that some people sweat more than others. [Emoticon not found]

    Wimps!

No seriously, whatever happened to the "oh my heck this is an awesome song! I am tired! I have to dance anyway!" ??????

Remember when Andy and Nina were here and they talked about hearing a song and wanting to attack it or something like that?

    Where's the passion?

    Where's the love?

Where's the sense of a challenge?

    Why do you dance?

Sweat is gross, but if you're having fun, no one really cares enough to NOT dance.

I am not as bad as Gumbi nor pops. But I do get sweaty after a couple of fast ones in a row. And when my allergies are acting up, I need more water than usual.

  7.

I don't really want to start a discussion about sweating and when is sweat too much sweat and all that, but my point is more towards "Do you not like a challenge?" and/or "Why do you dance?" Why is it that people won't push themselves to new limits with their dancing when 2 "fast" songs are played in a row? What about when the whole night is fast dancing? It goes back to that quote from Peter Loggins that T_Roach posted in the DJ help/Theory thread. If you want to become a better dancer faster, challenge yourself more often. I would like to see all the people on this forum dancing several fast songs in a row (no balboa). I'd come to BYU to see that.

That would be your interpretation, sir Buzz.

I thought it was a lot of fun; loved the music, I was just extremely tired that day, so I did ask for some blues [Emoticon not found] Or maybe it's just because I like blues.

I think BYU does challenge itself. Any time we give people a choice on what lessons they want, they ask for something new, and a lot of people are more willing to dance faster occassionally. I'll see some poor little newcomers dancing fast songs at half tempo during the dances. Sometimes, though, people get tired. It's human *shrug*

I do feel like there's too many excuses. If it's a jumpin', hot song, then dance to it. Take the phrase "It's too fast" out of your lexicon. Oh, and there's nothing wrong with dancing half time. That reminds me, only dancing to medium tempo songs almost always results in bad habits developing. The negative effects of the habits aren't always noticeable, but once the person dances to a "slow" or "fast" song, the habits turn their ugly head(s).

It was the "Human dance" after all.

I agree. But I also would add that dancing to slow tempo songs almost always or fast tempo songs almost always can cause the effect. It's about mixing it up and trying new things. Blues, Fast Lindy, Groovy Lindy, Balboa, Shag, Slow Lindy, etc.

buzz is still learning how to use the quote button.

  9.

I never said "don't dance to slow music," or "don't dance to medium stuff." Everyone on here screams "play a variety! equality for music! don't be a musical racist!" But whilst you scream out these pleas you complain that there were two fast songs in a row. I never hear complaints about two medium songs in a row, or two slow songs in a row.

If you want a variety, play a freakin' variety (slow, medium, and fast) and stop complaining about the variety that you you ask for.

I don't just bring this up for fun, I bring this up because 98% of the lindy hoppers in Utah suck at faster speeds. Why? Because 98% sit out when a "fast" song is played.

So, if you want to get better, get better. If you're only in it for the social aspect or to get a spouse, then yeah, I can understand it... you don't want to be too sweaty for the next slow song... [Emoticon not found]

    (No offense intended....)

    Hey, it just happened, alright?!

  10.

Alright alright, I wasn't talking about you anyway. You got married and you're still around. Obviously something else there besides looking for a spouse.

  11.

That's true.. you guys have to realize that when beginners see us at a venue they will take their cue from us the more advanced dancers.. and if they come to a venue and see us dancing to only slow or medium tempo songs.. and when a fast song comes on we all sit down or at least the majority of us sit down they will assume that fast songs are not meant to be danced to or you can't do Lindy hop to them.. I know this from teaching classes and teaching people to dance to faster music and they are usually surprised and say "whoa.. I didn't know we could Lindy this fast??!!"

So I agree that we do need more variety in our scene especially with the more traditional faster lindy hop and jazz. But that's just coming from a "Purist" (i figured i would call myself that before someone else does hee hee) But all in due time.. perhaps we need more people showing us how to dance fast.. I know we have some really good blues dancers in the scene (Thomas, Virgil, Justin.. and so on) And we seem to really encourage that more than the other, but I think overall we are really becoming more and more diverse all the time which is great!! And I have seen more and more people trying to learn to Lindy more. let's keep it up. Any suggestions on how we can get more people interested about Fast lindy Hop?

you're such a "purist" [Emoticon not found]

good question though. i know for me, i just need to do it more. i used to be better, but find myself running out of juice after a couple of fast songs.

  12.

Is everybody sitting down? If not, sit down. I'm going to announce something.

    Here it is:

I'll help whoever wants to dance fast if they'll help me with the slow stuff.

No, not the dirty blues. I'm talking about the ballroomin stuff.

Yes, I'm serious. I suck at it. I've gotta learn it better.

But only if I can help you dance faster.

Also, I'm pretty sure Shane and Julie would be happy to help out anybody who shows up to the Skillet. Just ask. You might even get Ron to help if you can get him to show up to anything...

Also, I think there's a misconception that being in shape precedes being able to dance fast. Imo, that's slightly true, but I'm a stinking grad student(in other words, the best work out I ever get is standing up and walking to the printer and back) and I can still dance to fast songs. The key (still imo) is finding ways to conserve energy when dancing. Dancing efficiently increases my ability to have fun (there's less gasping for air). I need to work on this some more so I would like to take pops up on his offer, but who knows when we'll be attending the same venue in the same evening.
