    Payless?

(You should make sure that you state that you are looking for swing shoes. And what type (ie hard leather or suede) and what price range could be helpful as well)

If you're looking for hard leather dress type shoes (pretty much the only kind I wear), www.dancestore.com is a good place. Cheap, good customer service and shipping.

We're also lucky to have two shoe cobblers right by Smith's. Logan's cobbler closed a few months ago [Emoticon not found] [Emoticon not found] He did a pair adidas for me w/ hard leather for $10.

What if I want suede. What's the pluses and minuses for suede?

+ A little more control than hard leather, while still giving enough slide to move around and do stuff

    - Not as fast as hard leather (if that's what you are looking for), wears out faster, is more delicate (never never never wear on concrete)

Also, hard leather gives you the ability to do some killer heel-slides while suede not so much.

They feel a little different. There are people that swear by both. I am more of a hard-leather man myself, but I have been known to use suede sometimes too.

I definitely love the durability feature of hard leather. It's okay if I get it a little wet or where them on concrete. Sometimes it even helps.

    word.

also, slippery shoes make sure you're keeping your feet under yourself. otherwise, it just doesn't work well.

i dance in suede. but i've walked on wet stuff and on concrete enough that it's just about as slick as hard leather.

i say buy a pair of cheap tennis shoes with little to no tread (such as chucks or purcells) and take them to a cobler to put leather on the bottom. or do it yourself. it's ridiculously easy, though you might get a little high in the process. [Emoticon not found]

So what's the difference quality and use wise in getting a pair of Aris Allen's and getting a pair of shoes cobbled?

If you get the AAs on sale, then it's almost the same price. Pretend we're going to get my adidas chromed: Adidas at Ross ($30) + Chromed leather at the cobbler (~$25). How much are AAs on sale?

Where did you get AA's for $40? I haven't been able to find them anywhere that cheap. I've actually only been able to find them at dancestore.com and they are like $80 there.

I would say your best bet would be to get a cheap, yet decent, pair of shoes and suede them, that should not cost you more than $30. Then all you have to do is sit and wait in the dark, shadowy recesses of the web until AAs come on sale again. That way you have decent shoes now, and a backup once you get some AAs or whatever else you get next.

this conversation is great and all... but since the actual topic is really closer to "dance talk", it's getting moved.

  2.

What's up with you guys moving stuff all the time?

As for dance shoes... you could also take some super cool tennis shoes and have the cobler but the same bottom as Character shoes on it. It's basically a glorified cardboard/plywood. IT is super slick (super is my word of the day.)

Slick shoes are good and all but now that I have been trying to dance faster I like realy worn down sneakers. They can still slide a little but they are great for keeping you on top of your feet. [Emoticon not found]

I've been considering getting a new pair of Chuck's and taking a belt sander to them.

  3.

Whether looking for suede or leather, www.dancestore.com has AA's in both styles.

Personally, I have both. I tend to like the leather better, but they also look way more formal, so I have to dress accordingly when I wear them.

AA suede shoes are about 50 whereas leather are 75-90, so that's probably also a factor if you aren't gonna be "hardcore"... not that I'm hardcore... anyway... yeah. Good luck on the shoe search.

QUESTION: Where is a good cobbler to have shoes leather-ed?

Just make sure to specify that yes, you do want ALL LEATHER on the heel, not a leather/synthetic combo, and that no, you do NOT WANT the soles to be polished (leaves the sole nice and black, which leaves nice and black marks all over the floor- no good).
