    Hey all,
We're looking to put together a house band to play at the Saturday night social dances. No this will NOT mean that you wont get to dance in the evenings, we'd only play a few songs each week (2 or 3 for the first while until we really get good, then probably no more than 10-15 songs once we really start swinging), so there will be lots of time to dance the night away.

If you are interested, post a reply on this thread with what instrument(s) you play, then stay tuned for more information.

What we'll need: (* indicates an optional instrument)

    Drummer
    Bass Player
    Guitar*
    Keyboard/Piano
    Saxophones (2-5)
    Trumpets (2-5)
    Trombones (2-5)
    Singers
    Flute*
    Clarinet*

There's not going to be any auditions or anything, and the music we're going to start with is not very difficult, so if you are thinking "well, I played the trombone in highschool, but it's been 4 years and I don't think I can do it anymore..." pull it out, wipe the dust off, practice a bit to remind yourself fingerings/positions/other shtuff, and post on this thread.

I promise, if you have any high school experience at all, you'll be fine in this band.

    Let's make it happen!

    Oh wait, no .. . .

  3.

I sing. And if you ever feel the need to put a tuba in your band, I can play that.

Clarinet here. I also played trumpet, but I can't find the trumpet anywhere. Maybe I will just have to watch Ebay for a good deal if we are in need of some.

Sing, clarinet, piano, and I used to play cello -- same key and general setup as a bass, just with fingers instead of a bow. If only I owned one, or even had the room for it. [Emoticon not found]

I used to sing and play the piano and I used to be good. My range has shrunk, but with practice I could pick it all up again (vocal range and piano). I'm an alto. Maybe we could even get some girls together and have a couple of duets or something.

The K family instrument collection contains at least:

    1. trumpet
      trombone
      guitar
      flute
      bassoon
      baby grand

I'll have to ask my dad about music left from his band, It seems like that was several decades ago.

Sheet music? I believe you can get a lot of good stuff for free on the internet. I think it's more of sitting down and saying, this time, this date, at this place. Like maybe 1-2 hours before Saturday dances.

  4.

just check one out at the HFAC, buzz. it's not likely this thing will really pick up, given sheet music costs, rehearsal times, and varying commitment levels, particularly the size of the ensemble, but even less likely to continue on for several semesters particularly when those who'd actually want to don't start up and get going and organized right away as opposed to "soon" (i.e. "almost" or "never"[Emoticon not found]

who would be conducting this thing anyway? and what of music?

I happen to be on BYU school of music faculty, and have access to any/all dance band sheet music I want. I'm planning on conducting the band as well, and have plenty of experience doing it (I promise, I wouldn't post that I'm organizing a band if I was planning on looking for another conductor). My post that I played saxophone in High school was a bit of a sarcastic remark, I'm actually a Junior in the Saxophone Performance program at BYU, so I play a little bit.

    ---Swing Kids Dance Band FTW!!!

The only reason we haven't started yet, is because I want to see what musicians we already have, and what I need to go scout for in the basement of the HFAC.

Though I don't understand why, people don't seem to want to see that so I'll just dress normally and still be the backup dancer on stage!

Seems like there have been quite a few people interested. He has already answered what they would be playing, as he has access to a lot of sheet music.

About the commitment, I find that most of the Swing Kids are fairly good about keeping their commitments, so I'm not too worried. Besides, it would be fun to just get together and play some music with some friends, even if we never got good enough to play at a dance. So I wouldn't really consider it wasted time.

hauling a tenor sax case around campus or to rehearsals hurts. I'm not supposed to carry heavy stuff.

it would be fun to get together, i'd just rather make a gig out of it in the strive for excellence musicianship. i dont think it's a matter of "Getting good" enough versus just knowing our parts and playing with heart. old habits.

Ive got to give Traci an men on that one. I played bass for 7 years and there were points when I would stop and reflect (ussually after hauling it a long distence) and say to myself why did I tell them I wanted the biggest instrament they had? Then I remember it was because the band leader wouldnt let me join up half way through the year. I had origionally wanted to play Tuba.

yeah...it's not that it's that heavy--it's just ridiculously awkward. to try and open doors and get you and that thing through the door w/out causing injury either to yourself or the bass(!) is crazy. still...i miss playing it. [Emoticon not found]

Yeah! they should make buildings with special String bass entrances. And put the handicap opener buttons on them too.

that would be AWESOME! and it could have a little picture of a string bass on it that people would confuse with a cello, and it could play some sweet sweet bass music when you push the button. [Emoticon not found]

(btw, K, not every door has those handicapped buttons.)

Well, yeah, why put a handicap button on a door without a ramp? Kind of defeats the purpose.

    Hey!
I wanna come! I used to play the flute and can occassionally plunk out Puff the Magic Dragon on the piano. May I mention how blasphemous it is that the flute was deemed "optional"? Talk about tragic [Emoticon not found]

I'm not hatin' on the flute here. I play it myself, I'm simply saying that in a dance band the part only very occasionally calls for flute. If we were putting together a band for a musical that would be a whole different story.

My experience has been that the flute player has to be REALLY good to make it swingin.

It works out, though, because I'm pretty sure Melissa would rather be dancing. At all times.
