Has this always been for rich byu students only? I went last year, but I also wasn't a student.

pretty much rich students and community members. Limited supply etc. If you've got money to burn. . . Otherwise just sneak in and dance anyway. [Emoticon not found]

What they don't do is feed the swing team the expensive dinner they feed ticket buyers.

$20 per person includes dinner, show and dancing in the Wilk to Synthesis.

Synthesis is the faculty jazz band, right? That's actually a decent deal, if $20 doesn't break the bank. When is it?

    $10!!

Through the BYU alumni site. Why they don't offer this to students is beyond me.

    muchas gracias special k.
to respond to traci, the faculty jazz ensemble is "Q'd Up" with ray smith, steve lindeman, ron brough, and Jay Lawrence, and Matt Larson, usually with guests like Kelly Eisenhower to sing a few numbers.

Ray Smith directs synthesis, which is byu's best "premier" student jazz ensemble \- in my opinion because i'm a saxophone player and biased towards rating wind brass and comp above "jazz" vocal groups.
and cost wasn't so much of an issue, when you've played gigs as a group, just try to do it as anything other than a hobby, you'll be sleeping in the streets in a few months. not that they are starving musicians by career, but i don't mind paying to see a quality student group

but thanks to specialk, the alumni will be subsidizing the cost anyway.
probably why they don't offer it to students, hard to raise much money in proportion to the operating costs and extra rehearsal times it takes for full band ensembles

I had some great dancing that night. [Emoticon not found]

I seriously recommend this group, as long as they have Steve Lindeman and his Hammond B3, for next years exchange if not sooner.

I had a lot of trouble when they played a couple of tango numbers. One of these days I'll need to learn the basics.

"They" meaning Q'ed Up? They could totally tailor their playlist to us, and it would be AMAZING!
