Hey ,
I wanna go to the next dance, but I just wanted to confirm where and when it was going to be. It's tat the KMB building? at 7:00pm ? If it was changed to a different location, where would it be changed to? Thanks,
Cobbweb
Yes it's at the KMB at 7pm (at least lessons begin at 7- the dance begins at [Emoticon not found]. If it were changed it would be at Castle Transylvania in the High Ballroom. Just because you were wondering.
HMMMM there are try outs this sat. I know, but is this the opening social as well??????
Yes it is gumby. We're piling it all on. I have mixed feelings about doubling up, but I guess it happened again.
The real concern about team try outs is commitment over quality or quantity. Commitment, focus and discipline make or break team.
That may be the main focus of the coach, but for me its a little different. Im more worried about other things like: having fun and possibly chalenging other groups in the area and out of area. I think we also need to start encouraging people on both A team and B team to do more traveling. I found that after I went to sacLX and DLX I was a whole different dancer . Its all about shaking things up a little if you want to get better.

Committment is huge. How can you measure committment in one evening?

Class schedule?
if there is a next dance Im not sure if we know where it will be so far KMB is not availible so look to the RB at this point
Yes it is the opening social and yes there are tryouts. But hey, consider it as taking a break from all they Gypsy-jazz and strutting your stuff.
In regards to team... I think there are two qualities that I always stress for people who want to make team. Commitment (as has been stated) and ability to learn. I look for that a lot in the people that I choose to be on my team. After they are on team, I want everybody to have fun and really become part of the swing scene. Of course we will learn our routines and perform as well.
I think another thing that is nice is having people who really want to become a team and help their team mates get better. I also like learning new moves I can add to my social dance. hey Buzz do you think you will take your team to denver in march?
Good points... Quantity over quality has been a downfall of many teams in the past that i've seen.. I think last semester Buzz did a great job with B team, it seems like all the dancers were having fun and their Lindy improved quite a bit. This Year's A team or whatever you wanna call it will have only 3 couples in it. I don't know if that's the team going to Boulder.. I think Buzz should be the one to go but that is all up to the Prez.
If dancers really want to get better, they have to change their mentality and start learning a he** of a lot more about dancing then they currently know. I have seen so many dancers here in little ol' Utah who have such big potential but sadly enough it is never developed.. We seem to have a scene where intermediate dancers never really go beyond that. Wether it be for financial resons (not being able to travel, or attend workshops, or take private lessons) or simply because they are not willing to make an effort to learn something they find challenging.
Example: I was into the whole Hollywood Vs. Savoy thing way back in the day.. and I never wanted to hear anything about "Hollywood Style" but as i traveled more and took lessons from various teachers, not just the ones i liked, It was clear to me that the concepts of a good basic were all related to each other in some form. I felt the same way with the whole Groove,WCS, Smooth style thing.. which happened like 3 years ago outside of Utah.. but it seems to be hitting here right about now (I could be wrong on this one) But beacuse I was in Utah I didn't really understand the whole picture.. so I once again had to go outside of the regular Utah teachers and Utah scene to understand it better, and not be so closed minded.
Some of the things that contributed to my dancing have been the luck i've had to take form some old school teachers who really knew their stuff. (DAvid DAlmo, Eddie and Eva, Lennart Westerlund, Steven Mitchell, Sylvia Sykes, Ryan Francois.. etc. etc.) These Teachers are the ones who helped all of today's superstars (Andy Reid, Skye Humphries, Peter Strohm, Nina Gilkenson,Virgine Jensen, Josie Say, NAomi Uyama... etc etc.) In my opinion if you have a solid understanding of basic dancing technics.. and I mean really understand it.. so much so that it is secind nature and you know where to place your feet and your body at any given time and you understand rhtythms and music. YOu can learn any style of dancing and you can take any workshop and then turn around and apply concepts from any teacher into your own dancing and make it yuour own.. at least that is what has worked for me
whew!! I went off on that one didn't I?

That was some good stuff thanks Boogaloo I agree 100% its all about going out of your comfort zone. Take a road trip get out of UT go dancing in a place you havnt been before. BOB brought up a good point the other day he said he might have to start traveling to the east coast because he knew so many of the dancers out this way that he wasnt getting as many new people to dance with. The thing I found important about that was when I was thinking of exchanges I wanted to hit this year I thought "man I had a great time in sac last year and at DLX I should go back there" I think it will help my dancing more to go places I havnt been yet. So my new goal is to hit at least one new place every year for an exchange or workshop.

I just want to let all the Provo dancers know that we are holding our LAST registration drive for Harlem Nights at the dance on Saturday. We wanted to show our love and give the Provo scene an extra opportunity to get in for the cheaper price.
This is your last chance to register for the special club-member price of $70. After that, the price goes back up to $85 until February when it goes up to $90. Look for our table at the dance. I will be there, along with Kate Rouse and Grant Keaton.
Also, feel free to ask us to dance!!!!!
I would recommend this workshop to everybody!! What a great opportunity to learn from some really amazing dancers.
How many other chances will you have to bridge the generation gap between the original Lindy and the future? $70 for an in state event is a pittance to meet the real deal.
If you have have no "Tango denaro" or what ever Bob usually says go rob someone it will still be worth it. just dont rob me!!!!! you wont get anything tell my spiders hatch.
May I just mention how impressive I find the Utah scene? It seems like the entire scene is always searching for ways to improve, and as a whole it seems like the scene has just exploded. And more people are coming in all the time! It just seems like almost every lead or follow I know is improving by leaps and bounds with every exchange/ workshop, and it's awesome how many people make the commitment to attend them. Obviously, we're a small scene and have a lot we can work on, but I think overall everyone is very good about doing their parts to improve the scene and that the individual dancers are really improving very quickly. It makes me wonder what the scene will look like after Harlem Nights.
Keep up the good work, Utah!
I feel so warm and fuzzy! I like it. Eff, that's probably one of the few positive posts I've seen about our scene!
And no, I'm not being sarcastic!
Well okay, maybe I was about the fuzzy part... but really, it's this attitude that will launch us forward.
Yeah yeah.. let's get back to the bashing, backbiting, and negative posts we are so used to... and BTW yeah I was being sarcastic [Emoticon not found]
Hot Chocolate, did you change your name? Or is someone just playing havoc by having a veeeeery similar profile?
