I said Yes. Although it's not just the floor. I'm looking at everything. I discovered something very interesting while watching people dance at Showdown and then Rhythmic Arts. You can sit there and stare at the really really good dancers and they'll never make eye contact with you unless you get in the way or something. Less than really really good dancers? They're always making eye contact with the people watching them. I've been trying hard ever since to not notice who is watching. I've never been the type who looks around, hoping someone would be watching, but I tend to pay attention to everything going on around me so I'd end up making eye contact a lot. It's kinda awkward when you make eye contact, whether you're the observer or the dancer. So I'm trying to not do that. I think that looking at the floor is preferable than eye contact with observers. Paying attention to your partner is better.

I answered no! I think I do a fairly good job of not looking at my feet. I dont do as well when Im learning a new routine, or when Im trying to figure out what my follow is doing. in the interest of not breaking the pyramid... but one quick comment for all leads-- I think there is a tendency among Utah leads to look around at other people while dancing, which is one of my pet peeves. You can get away with looking around briefly for floorcraft purposes, or if something really really awesome just happened next to you, but please do pay attention to your follows more-- you'll be surprised how much smiling at her when you dance makes the entire thing go easier. When you don't pay attention to her, or even when you're looking at her and seem absent through a lack of expression, the follow starts feeling like you'd rather be dancing with someone else, and will a) never ask you to dance again or b) get tense and nervous about messing up, and break connection. This is actually a complaint I have heard from almost every follow that I've discussed this with, so while you don't have to stare her down, at least focus on her and look like you're enjoying yourself.

in the interest of not breaking the pyramid... but one quick comment for all leads-- I think there is a tendency among Utah leads to look around at other people while dancing, which is one of my pet peeves. You can get away with looking around briefly for floorcraft purposes, or if something really really awesome just happened next to you, but please do pay attention to your follows more-- you'll be surprised how much smiling at her when you dance makes the entire thing go easier. When you don't pay attention to her, or even when you're looking at her and seem absent through a lack of expression, the follow starts feeling like you'd rather be dancing with someone else, and will a) never ask you to dance again or b) get tense and nervous about messing up, and break connection. This is actually a complaint I have heard from almost every follow that I've discussed this with, so while you don't have to stare her down, at least focus on her and look like you're enjoying yourself.
