good try, buzz. unfortunately, the next person to post posted a reply to the breastfeeding hijack, not to your off topic rambling. so your futile attempt at diverting the topic at hand was foiled!

    Fabz:

The preceding statement is absolutely bunk.

Just to clear up confusion, none of the described chips (CPU= Central Processing Unit) exist, nor will ever exist given Intel's branding shift.

    1. P4's are one of the biggest mistakes in corporate American history. Management and marketing decided that clockspeed sells, and produced a chip that in laymans terms could be considered to have ADHD. It runs at high speeds (up to > 3.4GHz! ) but is constantly starting the wrong tasks and throwing them away (Due to excessively long 30+ stage pipelines). The engineers produced what was asked of them, but it runs too hot and mispredicts too much of the time.

The best processors since 2000 have been produced by AMD. They have consistently outperformed Intel because they had to, and have succeeded in smart designs which would better meet the needs of most users if they weren't brainwashed by those foolish Intel marketers.

    2. Centrino is not a CPU. Centrino is a platform or chip set (set of chips) produced by Intel to accompany the Pentium M. The Pentium M is a specialized mobile CPU which differs markedly than the P4 and is more closely related to the P3. The Pentium is a good chip, and depending on which benchmark you run, is on par and perhaps a little better than AMD mobile CPU's. But the PM won't be sold any faster than 2.33 Ghz becuase of the way it's designed.

    3. The Pentium 5 won't be released. Intel is dumping their P4 mistake (Ever so quietly because they can't admit they were wrong), and with it the Pentium brand name. New Intel chips will bear the Core brand name. I've used a couple and they're fairly fast (I got a Powerbook Core Duo running both Mac OS X and Windows XP natively). The benchmarks are limited by some design differences, but clockspeed wise they are about on par, and some applications still show the AMD X2 trashing the Core Duo.

No thanks necessary, just trying to make the computer world a safer place for everyone.

aww. come on. we were talking about servers. not pc's. my pc is way cooler than a p2.

and, incidentally, the p3 architecture trashes p4 hands down as a server (see preceding post).

oh well...i still like the wireless...and compared to the variety of processors ive known ive decided that p4 is the best from my purposes...and the operating system does make a huge difference when you play with computers like i do.

none are. the only 'centrino' processors are core solo, core duo (i.e. centrino duo), pentium m, and celeron m (sorta...). except they never brand the celeron m as centrino.

Thanks for the clarification on the new Core chips Bobtheplatypus. I was correct in stating Centrino was developed to accompany the Pentium M, but incomplete in updating that info to note that Centrino chipsets will accompany Core chips in laptop computers.

Centrino is not a CPU. It is a branding scheme that encourages mobile computer makers to use several Intel chips, including wireless, on the computers motherboard. The Centrino branding campaign includes the idea of prolonged battery life. That is impossible with P4's because they suck down lots of power to get their high clock speeds.

The Celerons are lobotomized chips. Depending on which you get it could be PM or P4, but either way, they've killed cache and power saving features. Removal of power saving features would kill the long battery life and probably remove that part of the Centrino branding requirements.

And when I say lobotomized, apparently they hit it pretty bad and nobody should waste their money on them.
