I am no longer 23... sad day.

I've been repeatedly told I'm a rock, but actually it's 31. And I believe Ron is 35.
I thought you became a menace at 27.
Mesreth:I've been repeatedly told I'm a rock, but actually it's 31. And I believe Ron is 35.

No, the menace is supposedly at 25.... though hotly debated.
Hmmmm, well it was 27 back when I was when I was that age. [Emoticon not found]
The Menace bit falls under Mormon myths until someone can find it recorded in a publication before 1900. I suppose a transcription of records before then might also count, but they would need to be mildly authoritative.
Oh, and it's 26.
SpecialK is right in that it is a myth. It was supposedly Brigham Young who said it, but nobody seems to be able to find it recorded (sounds like Vaporware to me)
And ElChuy is right in that it's 25. For confirmation, just go watch Single's Ward. It says it in there.

Vindicated! Bwahaha!
Sorry to disappoint -- 27, according to this interview. http://www.lds-mormon.com/60min.shtml
The idea of 25 came about after the release of Singles Ward. [Emoticon not found] (at least that is what I think, I have seen no record of 25 previous to the time of that movie.)
The whole menace to society thing isn't a myth and I suppose it was one of those comments that drew a laugh in general conference. The idea that Brigham Young would say something like that and mean it is ridiculous.
I would like to see a link to it somewhere to solve my long quest. If anybody has found a reliable source where President Young said that, please post it!
Maybe you missed my first post Fin. Don't spread it as fact until you can verify a reference. So far no one has been able to show me or anybody I've asked.
Same with the quote attributed to several apostles about how people from previous dispensations will fall down at our feet in awe over people in our dispensation with President Hinckley etc.
Study logic... absence of proof is not proof of absence. You're putting forth a logical fallacy as a rational arguement. You cannot prove that Brigham Young didn't say it. It's like saying there's no proof that God exists therefore God cannot exist. Unfortunately, logic does't work that way.
It's not documented anywhere that Brigham Young actually said, "Every single man over 25 is a menace to society.", but it's so engrained in LDS culture (the saying has been around since before you or I was born) that it's hard to believe that he didn't say it.

Steve Young:Do you wanna talk about the pressure I feel? Brigham Young once said, right here on these grounds, that anyone over 27 years of age that's not married is a menace to society. So here's my grandfather telling me to get with it. You don't think that I feel the pressure? I guarantee it.
I'd call Steve a pretty decent source. Whether he said it amongst family members or as President isn't clear though.
SpecialK:Same with the quote attributed to several apostles about how people from previous dispensations will fall down at our feet in awe over people in our dispensation with President Hinckley etc.
This quote has been specifically refuted by Boyd K. Packer- he said that he never said it, nor any of his brethren..... just FYI.

Just a thought Jared, but maybe a transcript found on a anti website isn't the most reliable source.....
I should probably also put out there that I don't believe that it was actually said as so many people believe (at least not in the manor that people use it now). I just wanted to clarify that the myth was 27. [Emoticon not found]
I believe the whole thing came from a discussion about how men don't have an excuse for not getting married, as it was at that time their responsibility to do the asking.

At that time..... like.... now?
i think i'll change the title:
how old are you? (a.k.a. why aren't you married, you menace to society)

Only in Utah.
Not my fault, I did everything I was suppose to do. [Emoticon not found]

I have felt like that....
What do you mean when you say you did evrything you were supposed to do.. I am a little unfamiliar with that aspect of the LDS culture.. school me please
Well I just meant that I have felt many times like I have done everything I could- treated the girl right, been respectful, yadda yadda yadda, and the relationship still goes to pot... oh well, that is just what happens sometimes.. heh
I must agree with Finrod's statement in that absence of proof is not proof of abscence.
HOWEVER... abscence of proof is abscence of proof, and I believe that Brigham Young should not be attributed that saying until it can be shown that he actually said it. The prophets and apostles have been attributed many sayings that they did not actually say. I personally don't believe that Brigham Young would have said that, but that's just me.
I think it's possible he might have said it.. but only in a tongue in cheek sort of way...
