    2006-09-05 - Tuesday Lessons

Free dance lessons will begin on Tuesday the 12 of September. These lessons will be every Tuesday the entire year. They are progressive lessons that go over four weeks beginning at the start of every month. It is ok to start the lessons at any point in the month. Both beginner and intermediate lessons will be available, but everyone must complete the four beginner lessons before they can attend the intermediate class. We hope that this will help beginners and dancers of all levels to learn more past the first lesson. These lessons are fun and they will provide a great oportunity to improve. They are absolutely free and they are for everyone. You can bring a partner or just come alone. See you there!

I'm down for doing a master's class or think tank either at the house or at the RB (i actually say we try the RB cuz I like mirrors... mirror mirror on the wall...). 8:00 tonight.

    Who's game?

    Possible topics:

    1. >Varied rhythms in jazz steps and lindy
      >Dancing to the music's dynamics

    UPDATE:

We'll be at the RB (unless we can't find room in the inn, then we'll be at the house). Katie will be helping me teach.

Once we're done with the lesson at 9:00, I believe the dancing will move to the house. [Emoticon not found]

Just a heads-up, the Cougar Club Y Awards or some such are taking up all kinds of ballroom space in the Wilk. Word on the street is that we're running lessons in the KMB.

Whether that's wrong or right, it's sure not in the Main Ballroom.

Eh, this time I don't think it's personal. The crowd in the ballroom looked pretty legit. But we did do most of our dancing to Latin music. :-ъ

Oh, and it was awesome. In case anybody was wondering whether it was awesome.

  4.

    I concur; it was awesome.

You may have heard that the name of the lessons was "the magic of momentum" or something equally catchy and momentum-related. Last week they drilled momentum and worked it into basic Lindy stuff-- swing-outs, swing-ins, passes-- then finished it up with... this one cool thing. It's pretty west-coasty, and I've seen Jeremy do it at the House... sort of a two-handed whip with an alternating cuddle and a healthy shot of rotation all over it. Leading into a couch dip. Way awesome stuff. I've actually coveted those moves for a while.

Anyway, Tuesday we started by finishing up the whip-and-dip, reviewing, solidifying, figuring out, and then moved on to Charleston (in the Lindy sense of the word), applying some of the same momentum principles. Working on the foundation of Charleston basics, they introduced lollies, kick-ups, kick-outs, and switches, then added a follow's spin onto the switches, and a spin for leads and follows that you lead with a stretch on the switches.

Half of that is their terminology, and half is me trying to explain what we did. If anybody's really curious, I can try to go into more detail. [Emoticon not found]

Nah. Those are real switches, and Lindy switches. This was something we referred to as switches for convenience, and did from partner charleston. It's a sort of a one where when you're kicking to one side and then the other (except they're not really sides, because you're turning to face them, so you're kicking forwards both times but in opposite directions) and then the lead kicks the same direction twice in a row but leads the follow to kick alternating directions, so you're each kicking the opposite way from the other, and poof, you're into it.

Anybody more confused yet? [Emoticon not found]

I locked it. People who couldn't be bothered to read two pages to figure out there was a completley separate thread for Saturday dances as opposed to Tuesday lessons encouraged others to respond where they should not have.

Occasionally harsh measures need to be enacted to limit confusion and limit the exposure of overwhelmed swing kids newbies.

Do you plan to have lessons at the House 2.0 most every Tuesday all summer? Let me know, so I can adjust the official thread.

    TUESDAY NIGHT LESSONS!

    Tuesday, May 6 2008

7:00-8:30pm 2206E RB (in the new north wing).

Also: I have no idea who's teaching yet. Partially because I have no idea who is in town. Please make things easy for me by volunteering right here on the forum to teach a lesson! Don't make me dig for your phone number and call you up, or (worse) ask you to try and come up with something right when you show up. That's less fun for everybody, right?

Has there been any advertising for this? Now that it's not just "club night in the wilk" we're not going to get people randomly walking in and staying. Any beginners actually expected to show?

    Anna Widerberg

Hi, my name is Anna Widerberg. I am a young women's president in a ward in Lehi Utah. I just found out that our ward is supposed to teach a basic swing to all of the other wards at youth conference this up coming weekend. I was wanting to come to your dance tonight to take your 7:00 lesson, but I play on a women's soccer team, and we are in a tournament at 5:00 pm. Would it be a problem if I brought a group of youth to learn on Tuesday, or is there another time you could teach us just something real basic.

I have invited Anna and her group to come up to our Tuesday lessons. She says she'll be bringing a group of 10 to 15 people.

So is that a big enough group we might try to siphon off the intermediate dancers for a bit more advanced of a lesson? It always seems kind of silly when there're 6 beginners and 8 intermediate to split anything.

If we get four people there teaching, we can totally split off two groups. Ostensibly, it's my job to organize that, but until I do, it might not happen. If anybody wants to volunteer for Phil's job of last semester (call everybody up to try and get teachers), I can easily appoint you to that position. And eventually, I'll have to appoint someone anyway.

I hope there's lessons tonight. I need to learn some cool new moves

Hey, so I was trying to get a room for Tuesday lessons today. Maybe I was slow on the draw, or maybe whatever else, but none of the rooms were available from 7 to 8:30. There was one room I could have gotten for an earlier time, and another room I could have gotten for a later time, but I didn't take either of them.

What do you guys think-- should I have reserved one of them? Should I have done the earlier time or the later time?
