    Class descriptions

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Blues Basics

This class will present the basics of weight changes and traveling steps in Blues dancing. We’ll also introduce leading and following for the types of groovy movement that are critical to Blues dancing, such as the fish-tail.

    Swingin’ Basics

We would love to spend hours, days even, talking about and working on all the many exciting things that can happen in the Lindy Hop basic, and even then we’d only be scratching the surface. But instead we’ll confine ourselves to this one class, which will be suitable for intermediate and advanced students, and will also serve as an intensive Lindy Hop crash course for less-experienced dancers.

    Hip Stuff for Blues Dancing

This will be a class on leading and following from your center, the connection between your hips and your frame, feeling your partner’s hips and center, and the flow of energy which is central to Blues dancing. We’ll pick up on the fish-tail (which was introduced in the first class) and work out the details.

    Lindy Charleston

Charleston, just like the rest of Lindy Hop, is all about the lead-follow connection rather than learned patterns and moves. In this exciting and high-energy class, you’ll learn a bunch of cool Charleston ideas for use in your Lindy Hop.

    Swinging the Blues

This will be a class on mixing Blues styling into your Lindy Hop, and mixing Lindy Hop vocabulary into your Blues dancing. We’ll be exploring the sweet spot where Blues and Lindy Hop meet.

    Making your Swing Swing

Do you want to get inside the music rather than just dancing to the beat? This class will cover such topics as feeling the pocket in the music and expressing the specific groove of the song you’re dancing to; achieving flow in your movement rather than just stepping through the moves; and, understanding the structure of the song.

    Advanced Concepts for Lindy Hoppers

This class is limited to the top Lindy Hoppers at the workshop and is by invitation only. Attendees must have attended the rest of the workshop in order to participate. If you feel you belong in this class and were not invited, please speak to the instructors following the Saturday day workshop classes.

Solomon has been teaching dance since 1999. His areas of specialty are Lindy Hop, Balboa, Charleston, and Vernacular Jazz. Some of the places he's taught include Hilo (Hawaii), Honolulu, Oakland, Osaka (Japan), Ottawa (Ontario), Portland (Oregon), Quebec City (Quebec), San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle, Seoul (South Korea), Singapore, Tokyo (Japan). He's also taught with Noni Clarke in Pittsburgh, in New Haven (Connecticut), in Chicago, in Rochester (New York), and throughout Australia. He is also well known as a musician, playing piano and leading bands at swing dance events throughout North America and worldwide in such bands as Back Pocket, the Solomon Douglas Swingtet, and Corner Pocket.

Noni May Clarke (Melbourne, Australia) has been in love with Swing Dance since first taking it up in 2000. Her other dance experience includes tap, jazz, and classical. A member of the top-notch teaching team at Swing Patrol in Melbourne, Noni is a brilliant social dancer, a passionate performer, and a gifted instructor. Noni and her partner Josh McKiterick placed first at the Helzapoppin' World Championships (November 2004) and tied for first at the Australian Jitterbug Championships, Showcase Division (March 2004). Other than dancing, her strengths are fine arts and music -- she placed first out of 3,000 entries in a Victoria-wide painting competion; she plays the double bass and bass guitar, and has traveled all around Australia performing music. Noni has a loving personality and smooth but playful style of Swing Dance.

And I wish all the snow stay up in the mountain and NOT down here in the valley.

  3.

Not I. It gets too brown and dead looking in the winter here without snow to cover it!
