is it acceptable to say arse ?
i know! i thought she just said "poo".
I'm confused at to where you got an SMTP error. It shouldn't be from this server since we have no reason to run SMTP (email sending protocol) on the Swing Kids web site server.
It could however mean that someone succeeded in finding a hole in our BBS software. Good thing BYU whitelists all mail servers.
And no, it's not appropriate.
IT IS from your server ! I keep getting it too...you might want to look in to how phpBBS works...some BBS systems use SMTP to send confirmation messeges, and even if the user ahs set the confirmation messages option off it still generates the message (although eventually not sent)...and some (especially old crappy BBS systems) used SMTP to actually post the "post".
You might want to go through the settings of your phpBB and make sure that whatever SMTP server entries that might have been entered can be contacted from your server. (Actually make sure SMTP traffic can get through from your phpBB server to whatever entered SMTP server)...
When posting to a thread that people have posted to and marked "Notify me when a reply is posted" it sends an email.
edit: i got it when posting this message.
where is justin when we need him? and yes i can say arse. it is byu approved.
Yeah, I wouldn't bother with that feature since I get plenty of email as it is and check this site often enough not to worry about it.
We should probably look at turning that off since BYU whitelists SMTP servers i.e. You can only send email from/through an approved server on campus. This is generally a good thing when you consider the number of worms, etc which take advantage of unprotected computers.
End users being able to read our error messages isn't such a good thing.
I have a suspicion on who found this bug, but won't point fingers. Hopefully they will come back and find the information they are looking for. In fact I emailed them and removed what I hope is the offending post.
Let's hope the server gives up on sending mail, rather than continuing to attempt sending it.
ah, so it was caused by hack [attempts] through the forum? I hate it when people do that.
I was wrong about hacking. We're pretty sure this was just an internal error. I have seen BBS attacks on austinswingsyndicate.org/forums , and initially assumed that's what happened here, but I think this is due to BYU's general server setup.
pretty much... but it should all be fixed now [Emoticon not found].
Hooray for new servers...
yep.
