For the first time in BYU Swing Kids History!! (I think) [Emoticon not found]: We will be having a second dance room for your dancing pleasure. As it has been tradition for many many many years we will have all your favorite swingin tunes in the main room of the KMB. And now introducing (drumroll please....) in the smaller room of thr KMB we will be playing more traditional Jazz music from the Lindy Hop Era [Emoticon not found] ... You could call it a fast room.. but the music won't be necessarily faster all night, just Jumpin' So let's just call it... The Jump Session Room (music provided by The Sultan Himself) [Emoticon not found] Hope to see evryone at the dance tonight having a great time and dancing your heels off.. right POP?

Well all's well that ends well.. The jump Session room was moved to the main room last night due to a DJ conflict.. I hope everyone enjoyed the music and the preview of what the Jump Session room will be like... Stay tuned for an update of when The Jump Session room will take place next

  3.

    Good music man, good music!

I think everyone was dancing... that type of music should be played every week in the main room!

When he said rhythm perhaps he meant tempo?

  7.

OOOHHHHH!!!!!...... I see.. Now I get it.. Is that what you meant??.. you little insect you..

  8.

I thought there was a good variety of tempos... meaning, of course, that I didn't hear any blues and was therefore happy.

  9.

cool.. cool.. So there's 1 satisfied customer.. guess that is good enough for me

let me tell you the parable of the wise dj and the foolish dj...

there once was a venue in vancouver, and there were many dancers that attended this venue. on one night, a certain pair of visitors from utah also went to this venue to see what all the fuss was about. but on that certain night, there happened to be a slothful dj, and full of pride. one who didn't read the floor, nor did he appreciate the desires of the dancers.

"they have no appreciation for the classics" he would say when he saw the dance floor devoid of dancers. "they wouldn't know good music if it bit them" he would think to himself while the dancers muttered about the lack of variety in the music.

but in reality, the foolish dj was the one who could not see. he could not see that swing is more than one sound, one tempo, one style. he could not see that, while it is possible that everyone else in the room had bad taste, or a bad attitude, it is also possible (and probably more likely) that he was the one with a bad attitude.

    and our visitors left early.

now on the next night there was another dance, in another venue, with another dj. and he did pack the floor from the beginning to the end of the dance.

he played many of the same classics that the foolish dj played. he played many songs with similar tempo, and rhythm, and sound. but the wise dj also knew that variety is the spice of life, so he threw in a few songs that were entirely nontraditional.

the wise dj understood that, while the classics are nice, lindy is alive. it was, and still is, a street dance. there is no syllabus, nor a predefined set of moves that make up lindy. it has always been about freedom. he knew, also, that constraining the music to what it was "back in the day" would kill that spirit, just as much as constraining the dance itself. for he was a wise dj.

and he did play michael jackson, and all did rejoice. especially since he only played one.

and our visitors did stay unto the end of the dance, and it was all good.

seriously... i danced for about half the night, then the "foolish dj" played a song that i wasn't feeling. it was a good swing song, but i wasn't feeling it at that time.

    so i sat it out.

then the next song came on. it had different words, but was the same tempo, the same sound. the same recording quality. the exact same "feel" that wasn't doing it for me on the last song.

    so i sat it out.

but the next song was the same. and the next. and the next. i soon realized that i'd been "sitting one out" for over an hour.

not because the songs were bad. i normally love those songs. but it prob'ly would have taken one or two songs that were different to get me going again. and i waited over an hour for one that was different. and never heard one.

    so i left.

  10.

I see.. are you calling me a Foolish DJ?

Personally, I wasn't a fan of most of the music played at the CJ dances. I like a lot of variety in rhythm, tempo, style, etc. To me, it seemed like most of the songs were the same style and tempo, so I had a hard time getting into the music.

  13.

    personal tastes I guess.

    *sigh*

So would that make Zach Fidel? Zach Castro?

  16.

I nominate Ron to be the communist swing dictatorship leader. As long as I'm favored of the dictator.

  17.

I accept!! All hail General Ronaldo
