gumby:the important thing is that SpecialK new all the spice girl words [Emoticon not found]
Excuse me?? I knew where the breaks are in the song, not the words. That's a huge difference.
You have to get a feeling for the breaks in a song so you can do really cool hits and lines in your dancing. How's that for getting a thread back on topic.
Effervescence:and John using the Decon shuffle as an example during lessons on Saturday
[Emoticon not found] I'd like to hear more about this!
Effervescence:I did really like the explanation on open and closed leading/ following. I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of feeling the differences, but in the interest of not hijacking a lead at the wrong time, how do you tell when a lead is open or closed? Other than it having a more controlled feel?
It depends on what you mean by "controlled." It certainly shouldn't feel forceful or overly controlled or anything when it's "closed." Open leading is not the absence of leading, but is actually led. Open and closed are both leads. The absence of leading is just the absence of leading and shouldn't happen while you're dancing. [Emoticon not found] Basically it's just timing and tension. Find me at a dance and I'll go over what Kevin taught me. Anybody else have any thoughts on this?
One of my pet peeves is trying to lead a closed pass by and have the follow push her hand into my hand with quite a bit of tension and basically say "I'm hijacking and this is now an open pass by." A lot of the guy follows here in Utah do this. Follows, your arm should not get really tense and push hard into my hand when I lead a pass by. I certainly mean no offense to anyone who does it, it's just a bad habit like many of the things I do when I dance.
NO no no.. you're all wrong

I think Effervescence does a fine job of following open and closed leads and plays just fine within the leads as well. I may have a skewed point of view however because we dance together often when trying to figure moves out.

Thanks, Gumby! I tend to do a better job of feeling differences in leading when I've gotten used to someone's lead, though-- I'm still working on being as clear with people I'm not as familiar with. Not that I don't appreciate the vote of confidence.
And thanks for the offer to go over some of this at the next dance, PTS! I will most definitely be taking you up on that.
It seems like the more I learn about lindy, the more I realize I have to work on. Keeps dancing interesting, I guess [Emoticon not found]
Exactly. An open lead should really feel... well... open. It seems like you feel you can add to the dance without having to hijack.
A closed lead feels closed. Complicated, I know. But if I try to throw something into a closed lead (as a follow) then it feels off and like I have to force it in there.
And I do that sometimes. Can you ever forgive me Ryan?? [Emoticon not found]

I think Socrates was a lindy hopper!
