    Tommy:

The USDA Presents: First Friday Swing Dances

The Utah Swing Dance Association will begin a new series of monthly swing dances starting on June 2, 2006.

These dances will be held the first Friday of every month from 9pm until Midnight at the Salt Lake CORS building: 870 E, 7145 S. (Click on map for driving directions)

The cost for these dances is $10 per person or $15 per couple.

A free introductory swing dance lesson will preceed each dance at 8:00.

Our goal with these dances is to continue the high energy and fun atmosphere we have at the exchange throughout the year. We also hope this venue will help to grow the swing scene in Salt Lake and encourage everyone to be the best dancers they can be. We plan on accomplishing these goals by providing the very best Swing Dance Experience possible.

    This includes:

    - Live local music at each dance

    - A large, attractive venue with a beautiful wood floor and ample parking

    - Top notch instruction for newcomers before each dance

    - Monthly contests with prizes

    - Support of the community through hosting of special events, performances, etc.

We hope you find this new venue as fun and exciting as we do, and we're looking forward to seeing you all out on the dance floor!

    - Bug & Tommy

    Music: Battle of the DJ's

For our inagural dance, we'll be hosting a true battle of the DJs. The battle is open to anyone who wants to enter. The USDA will donate 25 dollars to the pot for every DJ that enters the contest, with a maximum of eight entries (so sign up early if you want a slot). Each DJ will have an allocated amount of time to spin their best tunes and impress the crowd. The audience will vote at the end of the night and the winner will receive the pot. The winning DJ could end up with 200 dollars!! Email info@swingutah.com to enter or for contest rules.

We'll also be featuring a monthly Amature Lindy Jack and Jill Contest. Ron, Bug and Tommy and two other yet-to-be-named dancers will be the judges for this contest where anything goes. The winners get free tickets to the following month's dance. A prize worth 20 dollars!

    Music: Tad Calcara Combo

Tad Calcara began studying piano at ag 5 and clarinet when he was twelve. He is currently the principal clarinetist with the Utah Symphony and the leader of the New Deal Swing Big Band. He has shared the stage with the Utah Swing Dance Association at Abravanel Hall and performed at the 2006 Utah Lindy Exchange. Tad's bands specialize in performing early Big Bandrepertoire from the late 20's to the early 40's.

Special Event: Camp Hollywood Send Off Party

Come and give your support for the Utahns that are competing at Camp Hollywood at the end of the month. We'll feature performances by all the dancers who plan on competing in Los Angeles!

    August 4th 2006

Music: The Red Rock Hot Club

The Red Rock Hot Club is Utah’s Premier Gypsy Jazz Guitar Project. All the music is in the style of Django Reinhardt or “Jazz Manouche.” This music is an echo of the musical mix that took place in the 1930’s when American swing found it’s way to Paris. The music has many names; Parisian Jazz, Euro Swing, Vintage Jazz, but the longevity of this music is owed to the gypsy caravans who have adopted this music as "their sound" as they’ve roamed all corners of Europe. This music can range from sweet and lowdown melodies to hard driving swing. www.redrockhotclub.com

    Special Event: Team night

Come cheer on your favorite local swing team as they compete for some super sweet prizes.

    September 1st 2006

    Music: Melissa Pace Quartet

    Special Event: College Night

Bring a valid, current local college ID and get a discount at the door. This month's jack and jill contest will be replaced by a jam-style battle of the college swing clubs. Stay tuned for more details.
