Stereotypical savoy style (imo) [Emoticon not found] :

wardrobe -- bleyers, adidas track pants, savoy-style t-shirt

fave teachers & dancers -- david dalmo, steven mitchell and erin stevens, ryan francois and jenny thomas

style -- definite bounce throughout any song.

    etc...

Not many here are old enough to remember these two at byu.

    But seriously...

    mikey faltesek:

savoy style is such a funny term. I agree with Norma Millers definition of the term, to her savoy style was trying to dance faster than everyone else. Because that is how the dancers at the savoy seperated themesleves from the rest of the lindy hoppers and how they won almost every harvest moon ball.

    Read on.

btw, I dedicate falty's quote to PTS!

right, but what i don't get is what they're calling "modern savoy" because no one who got 100% on that "style" dances with much of a bounce, or much like what you or i tend to think what "savoy" is.

I have a theory. I think some people have misconceptions, or at least differing viewpoints resulting in differing conceptions, about certain styles or types of dances and music out there. And I base my theory on the way we label -- and sometimes mislabel -- certain dances and music.

For example, George Christopherson. In my eyes, he is a jitterbug from head to toe, in ever sense of the word. He is a contemporary of Dean Collins. I would also label his dancing as Lindy Hop, because Dean Collins would and because when I see him dance and hear the music he is dancing to, I think Lindy Hop. But Jeremy (of Provo-Orem) says it's straight up West Coast. BAM! Right there folks. Different names, same dancing. I think it's more of a "rose by any other name" kind of thing. In a broad sense and in my opinion, what matters is "can they dance?" (p. 5). In George and his partner's case here, OH YES, THEY CAN DANCE!!! WAHOO! Whatever we label it as, it doesn't matter in the long run. But that's my point of view. And that's another reason that I like and respect good west coast swing dancing. It's really not that different from lindy hop. Even if it were that different, why would that be a bad thing? Diversity is something to be proud of and sought after... but that another soapbox of mine to be saved for another thread at another time. Another fun example. One more. Ya another.

Another example is blues. Melissa asked me to play some blues last night. So I did. She said, no I want blues. Well, I was playing 6-bar blues, but it was uptempo from what she wanted. I wasn't playing jump blues, just not the "slow" blues she wanted. Does blues = slow? I hope not. One O'Clock Jump for example is blues, but it is usually more uptempo.

Also, the article on swing-dancer.com about how west coast has changed helped this all make a lot more sense now. Maybe George and Freda are old school West Coast, kinda like Dean Collins is West Coast? Am I on the right track?

I kind of wish I could find a copy of this one old clip of Sonny Watson dancing back in the early 80's... you all would probably think he is doing some sort of Lindy, but he is pure WCS through and through. What George (and his partner--she is an important determiner of the dance) were doing in that one clip was solid WCS... it was about the 1990's when the dances actually started looking very different and WCS was danced to much slower music (and some people could still dance to really fast music). Keep in mind that WCS has existed since the 1930's and you all are assuming that anything danced before the 1960's (sometimes 90's) was Lindy. Perhaps y'all aren't quite aware of the classic differences between the dances--some of the old clips are actually WCS and some are definitely Lindy. There's not a huge difference, but there is one.

Interesting... I was at a Lindy Hop workshop this weekend, and the teacher there was telling his story about how he came to do lindy. He said west coast and lindy were pretty similar until the 70s when disco came into the picture and changed the whole dance to what it is today

Sounds like he's been around--I don't think anyone would argue with that. Yeah, they all kind of danced to the much of the same music pre-70's and had very few remarkable stylistic differences. I'd even go as far as to say that the music was similar (though not the same) through the early 80's. If you look carefully, you can see a distinct difference in the dances though.

There are even some really old clips from the 40's or 50's (I couldn't really tell) where you can see several couples doing West Coast Swing and one or two doing Lindy. Back then, the Lindy dancers generally looked much more dynamic so you could see the distinction. And Dean Collins clips are usually a great example; everyone else is dancing primitive WCS while he is totally in the Lindy zone... but yeah... there's been some controversy about Dean. I say he's got pure Lindy roots (but could still dance with people of any style). JMO.
