I just got a new job in Provo and am not very familiar with the area. I was hoping that some of you could suggest some good places to live (or warn me of places that I should avoid). I would like a place with just two or three roommates that is somewhat social with a little older crowd.

Gee, I'd like tot find a place like that too. Unfortunately I haven't yet.

As you move further from campus, you tend to get older crowds, but some places could be great and others horrible. In general, it seems people are more social and friendly in apartment complexes as opposed to spread out housing situations. One thing I consult when I'm looking is the ward boundaries maps http://plantwo.byu.edu/churchweb/index.htm . Through careful cross referencing you can avoid orphan apartments that are separated from their wards, early meeting times which put a damper on late night swing activities, and some other housing hazards.

Roommate roulette is one of the biggest hazards. This year my roommates were useless for social things and nobody ever came over no matter how hard I tried. That is a simpler problem than slobs, food thieves and the like, but finding a place with friends will save you some trouble.

    Getting back on topic....

Mindy are you looking for a house or an apartment complex?

If you are looking for a house, I don't know of any.

If you are looking for an apartment complex, I have really like Cinammon Tree and Roman Gardens (both have a little older crowd and in general are fairly social wards)

The following is a general overview on Provo's living quarters:

If you want to be around a lot of LDS college kids, your best bet is to try to get housing between 9th East and University Avenue (for East and West) and between Center St. and BYU Campus (for North and South). If you prefer a more religiously relaxed environment, try the housing west of 500 W (State St.) that's north of Center--but do be aware of a slightly elevated crime rate.

Far-south Provo is better for a somewhat non-LDS environment, but it generally has a very high crime rate. The area farther north of BYU (2200 North and above) and east of 900 East is mostly residential and family housing with many staunchly LDS people. The student areas immediately north and west of BYU are a mixed bag--I think Buzz was suggesting that Cinnamon Tree is one of the good ones over there.

But like I said--this is all generalized information. It's only good for estimations.

Since students are moving away for the summer, inexpensive summer contracts are available just about everywhere--especially in the grid south of campus (first area I mentioned). Regrettably, I have no advise for getting non-psycho roommates; you've pretty-much got a 50/50 chance in Provo no matter where you go. I hope some of this helps a little.

Just talked to Britt and she said she'd let me know when you two start looking for places together. I'd highly consider moving in with you guys (if that's alright) depending on where you want to go. I'm kind of tired of commuting, but I still have swing team in Salt Lake, so it will depend on just how far south you go and whether or not I have to sign the honor code. Yay for swing friends! if you move into BYU-approved housing, you shouldn't have to sign the honor code itself, but you may have to sign something that says you'll uphold some of the things in the honor code (like no boys in your room, kicking boys out after midnight). i'm pretty sure it doesn't hold you to keeping the entire honor code.

Yeah, I'm stuck in BYU-approved housing. The gist of it is that you have to uphold the entire body of the honor code while in the apartment. For example, having alcoholic beverages in your apartment would be a violation of the rental agreement. However, if it appeals to a person, they can still go out and get drunk as long as it's not at home.

It's a touch repressive, but it could be worse. Also, a lot of honor code issues that are still technically part of the rental agreement (such as the dress and grooming standards) are not enforced upon non-BYU students.
