As I was walking away from the wilk tonight I was thinking that we (Utah) needs a great event in the early fall -- no more than a month after school starts at the various institutions of learning throughout the state. Something that out-of-staters wouldn't necessarily come to; A chance to hang with fellow utahns; Maybe a small (4 hour maybe) workshop featuring classes from our best teachers (Tommy, Bug, Kristen, Jazzy J, Tiffany, Shane & Julie, Boogiepoo... er... Boogaloo, Provo Jeremy, etc...) maybe with two tracks in order to seperate the different levels of dancers or according to interests (i.e. can Candice from Cali teach Collegiate Shag???); and lots of great dancing w/ the best local djs and maybe even great local live music. AND I think Provo (not necessarily byu) should host it [Emoticon not found] So whatcha think?

One reason for this was that I was talking to someone at the lessons tonight and they said no one in Utah dances like Ron. I was like huh?? True, no one has his specific stylings, but just cuz no one at BYU dances like him yet doesn't mean noone else in utah dances like him. No biggie, but I felt it was implied that BYU's manner of dancing is typical of the rest of Utah... anyways that's another topic but it did lead me to think of the above event.

What about the practical aspects of it? I've heard there's a lot of red tape to work through to plan a byu event. Would it better to have it be independent? Or should we just have Friday night be at the Skillet, workshops during the day at BYU on Saturday and then BYU's dance that night? The Skillet does have more rooms to dance in... mmm... Sounds like BLUES ROOM!!

I hate to be the pessimist here, but having a blues room at a local event is going to make both rooms less-than-fantastic. If, however, all those people are in one room you'll have a lot more fun. I don't think we can get enough people out to make two rooms of happiness.

Or maybe it's just that I don't like blues. haha

  2.

I'm with Pop on this one..I will however refrain from making any comments about blues dancing and lindy hop

I agree about the two-room thing. I don't think that there are enough people in the Utah scene to really do two rooms justice. But, if you invite a few out of towners, you probably could pull it off.

You're not catching my vision I guess. There are sooo many dancers up in Logan, but they just don't get out of town. There are sooo many dancers at BYU, but they just need to go to the Skillet. I don't know about the U. So, I figure we need a regional swing dance earlier in the year where EVERYBODY can go and afford and hopefully afford to take the workshop too. Hypothetically, if we promoted and priced it right, could we have two rooms -- at the skillet? Now realise the Skillet's main room isn't that big. Plus there are poles to dance into [Emoticon not found] Thoughts?

if we could get half of BYU's semi-regulars out to the skillet, we'd need more than one room. we just need a reason for everyone to go.

take sacramento for example. i think we had enough people from BYU alone to fill the regular room at the skillet. i know logan has a bunch. i haven't danced at the U recently, but i could see needing three floors this thing, if it were promoted properly.

    i'm with you, grant.

I'm gonna chat w/ S&J about this... see what they think [Emoticon not found]

  3.

Disclaimer: I ramble in this post.

So I guess the key is promoting it right so you can have your blues room. [Emoticon not found]

How do you do you promote to the people who don't come out dancing?

As much as I like like the skillet, it's not a good venue for a big event like this. Two rooms is fine, three is kinda odd. One blues, two lindy? Same types of music in both rooms? One fast, one slow? When one DJ plays a crappy song the room would totally clear out as everyone went to the other room. The skillet is an obscure, hard to find little thing. Somewhere like the MAC would work best I think, but only then if you get a lot of people out (because getting two rooms full of dancers there would be a lot of people. If you couldn't get enough people to fill the MAC, and too many for the skillet, where do you go? And if we used the MAC we'd have to make sure that we would control ALL the music so we wouldn't have west coast music killing the energy. [Emoticon not found]

The only event I've seen well promoted over the last year has been ULX. And then, we don't really even know how many Utahns showed up to it (100? 150? 200?).

I'm not saying you can't do it. I sure as heck hope you can! I'm only saying I'd rather have one sweet room of dancing than two crappy rooms of dancing. I'd also rather have one big sweet room of dancing than a sweet moderate sized room and another room for blues. There's something about being at a big, crowded dance... it's a lot more fun!

I want to see posters, flyers, and other hype for this thing at least THREE MONTHS in advance.

And yes, I would be willing to help as long as you don't make me build a website. [Emoticon not found] [Emoticon not found]

you can't get the mac... remember that conversation before ULX?

the one that went something like "As long as we get $6 a head for everyone that walks through the door, and as long as we have enough space for each and every one of our regular dancers, and as long as we have a say in the music, sure. we don't mind."

i dont' think that's quite what we're looking for...

the apollo might be a better bet. it's not really near any of us, and it's a longer drive for the logan kids... the one limitation would be the bluesey folk. they prob'ly don't want to have to dance in the lobby.

Yep, it's just not the same unless you leave thoroughly kicked and bleeding.

However, I think this could be a great idea. Considering doing the Saturday dance at the KMB is a definite possibility. Think of it, a large room for fast lindy and a large enough room for blues. That building seems to present the best option. The only part that sucks is guest services.

But this could be cool. Of course talking about it isn't going to get anything done. If this is to happen, definite plans need to be drawn up soon and advertising started.

Do we need to sit down and iron this out? I'm in provo still...

Ya, I thought the skillet was a bit odd cuz of it's location and size. If were going to do it in provo, we should stick to the area.

Btw, how's the Provo Library? I heard Remily or somebody had a reception dance there. (Didn't Elder Groberg used to dance in the Provo Tabernacle or something? [Emoticon not found] )

How realistic is the workshop idea? Location-wise? Provo peeps really need to take from Jazzy J & Tiff.

Well you guys work it out an dI will show up and dance.. But just so you all know I am still putting to gether the Harvest Moon Comp. and Dance I put together last fall.

I could have sworn I went to a swing dance like 4 years ago in the library when they first redid it, and they had a big wood floor ballroom on the second floor... but perhaps I am confusing the library with a different building...

Another development. USO (Utah Swing Open) was intended to be just about what I just described. Last year of course it was combined with the ALHC regional qualifiers. Sooo, I should chat w/ Nate & Kaia to hear about what they've done in the past. Sadly it never really took off as an event. But if we combine the concept of the USO, meld ideas w/ Boogieloo, and add a little pr/marketing spice & the other ideas we've got here, we could have a great fall event. [Emoticon not found]

The movie was all filmed in the NZ and the Cook Islands. In the commentary I recall them saying they grabbed Swing Dancers from all over the south pacific

    http://www.ldsfilm.com/OSOH/OtherSideOfHeaven.html:

"The Cook Islands has become the shooting location, for convenience. Crew and cast, Mitch says, are either based in New Zealand or are more experienced with shooting in the Cooks. Auckland, N.Z. will also stand in for scenes in the United States."

"Doubling as the Maeser Building in 1953, an old museum played host to the movie's opening scene -- a swing dance where BYU freshman John Groberg played his trumpet and watched as his dream woman danced the night away with someone else."

I have trouble believing you could fit a dance in the Maeser building, even if the whole building were open instead of partitioned into rooms the way it is now so I doubt the accuracy of this statement.

" Prima Swing Riot, Aukland, New Zealand's hottest show band, performs the opening dance sequence in the movie."

""The Other Side of Heaven" was shot in New Zealand last year and cost $7 million to make, though the filmmakers promise it will "look like a $30 million film." "

It was probably filmed before New Zealand was the place to make movies, though it came out during my mission just like LOTR did.

i think they meant that the set doubled as the maeser building and where they held the dances. i thought the dance was supposed to be in some sort of gym in a building that doesn't exist on campus anymore. maybe it was supposed to be the smith fieldhouse? i haven't really paid attention to that movie.
