t_roach:Here's the scenic route.
a.k.a. the seasonally closed route... [Emoticon not found]
No problem! We will have lessons and dancing until 11... I have the keys, so we should probably just expect 11 in general... Thanks!
I dunno, I think Grant's way is faster, that is if you have a car that corners like mine does. I'll see you all there at midnight
fun times last night. Thanks to Dan and all the dancers who helped keep the party alive, especially during the last song
The following announcement was sent to those who stay in touch with the Social Dance Club:
BYU Social Dance Club:So, as some of you may have heard, this week is Care Week. It is an opportunity for clubs to donate to charities. I was unable to put something together for our club in time for the deadline, but I wanted to let you all know about the Swing Kids dance in rooms 270 and 278 of the RB this Saturday, if you are available, I hope you all go. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday!
So nobody be terribly surprised if there's an influx of the ballroom folks.
This Saturday at the closing social:
Come get your letters!
I have letters back for everyone who's writing letters for the club, so it is time to start writing! I need everyone's letters back in time to turn them in by January 11th-- the Friday after Christmas break.
I'll be out of town Saturday night, and won't make it to the closing social, but I'm arranging to have the letters there for you to pick up.
This is a shout out to everybody who made this Saturday's dance awesome! Kevin and Ryan for DJing, Daniel and Chelsy for running lessons, and everybody who came and danced! [Emoticon not found]
Hey, we're still open!
Hey, so I had a thought about the dance last Saturday. It seems like we had a good turnout, but all the beginners showed up towards the beginning, and left by 9 or 9:15, and everybody who's already been around a while and knows how to dance (basically anybody who's on the forum) showed up at 9:30 or 10. It seemed to me like a lot of people at the beginning of the dance would have had a better time and stayed longer if there had been more people dancing and having a good time at the beginning.
It's like we suffered from some kind of chronological schism. Anybody else picking up on that?
shame
Oh, I picked up on that years ago. That's why I know I'll see my friends when I show up after 9. . . .
Which is convenient because even though I'm not at BYU anymore, it can take a while to get down to campus after taking care of other social/homework/housework responsibilities for the day/evening and still catch the best dancers.
I think in some ways this relates closely to the tirade Virgil was having off to the side about "committed" dancers in the BYU scene and Utah in general. I'm still confused how we would get more better dancers by charging more money for instruction and dances.
For BYU dances and beginners though, forcing us to be done closer to 10:30, as has been dictated by the move from the KMB to the Exercise Science buildings, is a good thing. It encourages experienced dancers to show up earlier if they want to dance, and means that there is the possibility of more cross pollenization between newbs and old fogeys. Shorter dances are also less of a toll on El Presidente and the DJ's, etc.
that's a shame, But then again its Utah and the glory days of swing are long gone. I think there's only. 10 people in the scene today who can remember having 300 people at the byu dances every Saturday night. Those were the days
Come to think of it, I guess the Skillet works a little bit like that. But it really seems more balanced. You have a good dose of regulars there at the beginning, and as the crowd builds, new people come in as well as experienced dancers... especially as the beginning lesson ends.
Actually, the skillet holds newbie lessons simultaneous with the initial hour of dancing and dumps them on the floor at 10 when most people have or will show up soon. This frequently keeps Shane from dancing until 10:30. Since most people like to dance, keeping your instructors off the floor past the best part of the dance isn't fun. Of course the club president/dance organizer, DJ, cashier and instructors get less dancing opportunities anyway, which is just a sad fact of life.
Some weeks there's no one on the floor at the skillet for much of the 9 o'clock hour, though lately the floor has been more active from the start. It gets pretty crowded at 10 though, frequently too crowded for everyone to dance, then starts to taper off after 11. That puts your peak dancing time at the skillet in the less than 2 hours between 9:40 and 11:20.
Hey, so I think I might have misplaced the PHXLX flyers that Daniel brought from Dayla. If anyone sees them or has them, give a shout.
so I'll be in town Sept 27th. Is there dancing on that day?
I haven't booked the room yet, but we're certainly planning on it.
In case anyone still checks the website, Ransom confirmed that there will be a BYU dance this Saturday after Thanksgiving. It will be the only Lindy Hop dance this week that I'm aware of since the skillet and others are canceled for the holiday.
