yeah, but when your friends with bad myspace taste are really close friends, it could be insulting to them if you don't add them. which is why i do have a myspace account, but i rarely go there.

Yeah, um, so last week my stake president got up in stake conference and said not to use myspace or facebook. He brought up reasons like protecting personal information and not wasting your time online when you should be doing stuff with the people around you. Since I'm not an addict, it's not much of a sacrifice for me, but it seemed kind of funny he'd single out those two.

Sooooooo..... writing email is out then too? And I probably shouldn't give BYU my real address and phone number either, right? 'Cause, you know they put all that information in their online directory that is available to ::gasp:: everyone.... [Emoticon not found]

all you internet kids are wasting your lives. you'll never amount to anything! you'll never make any money with those darn computers.

get a real job. like a plumber. or a carpenter.

sometimes i wonder if people realize that browsing the internet, using social networking sites and posting my personal information all over the 'intranet' is part of my occupation? that keeping abreast of the latest trends in design, features and functionality of all these "time-wasting" sites on the internet is the equivalent of continuing education for teachers...

p.s. you don't have to post any personal information on the internet to use myspace, or liveJournal, or Xanga... you can make up a fake account and nobody will ever know. in fact, there are a ton of kids under 14 that do exactly that, just so they'll be allowed to waste time on myspace too.

I was curious what sort of response this would get which is why I posted it.

I make sure I'm up on technological issues because they interest me. That's why I decided to study computer engineering, and that's why I spend a couple of hours most days on mailing lists and technology news sites. Some of the stuff is a waste of time, but having working knowledge of processor architecture for the G4/G5, Cell, Athlon64, P4, and Niagara (SPARC 5 I guess) chips is a valuable skill if I want to be designing them.

On Friday I was the only person in my Integrated Circuits class who had any idea what the Cell processor was when it will be inside the PS3, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Revolution. Of course then I don't really play games anymore and missed the last round of consoles anyway. This was advantageous because the person asking was an IBM researcher who I might work with in the future.

I have heard through the media grapevine that some job interviewers and school application reviewers do myspace/facebook searches to evaluate individuals. Can't remember the details, but someone warned not to post obscene/indecent stuff for that reason... something like that.

The story I saw was just a picture of a girl with her eyes half closed put up by her friend suggesting she'd been getting high. Though not accurate, it possibly lost her a job or two.

Blogs, facebook, SKC forums or anything, one you put it out on the web, anybody can see it and some creepy people can connect the dots and learn a little more than you'd like them to know.

  5.

This is not directed at anyone in particular...

What matters more, that a local leader tells you to avoid something, or that you know more about the internet than the local leader?

Of course, the advice of that leader obviously does not apply to those of us outside of the leadership of that man.

what matters more is an older person is telling you how to live like they were in the 1940s and 50s in the year 2006. I can definitely see a conflict there.

oh, there is nothing wrong with a little rebellion. [Emoticon not found]

Fortunately I do not live in the stake of said president, so I am perfectly free to ignore and/or criticize any opinion that I feel invalid. Now if the general authorities were to come out and say something, weeeeell....

Hm... I think I could have pinned that one.

Anyway, there is a big difference between when leaders are giving advice or when they are giving "commandments." General Authorities will speculate on many things and vary in their opinion the one from the other (and if you don't believe me, just read church history) but that's different than when the first presidency makes a statement, which then becomes official church doctrine. Don't waste your life on MySpace or Facebook? Sounds like good advice to me. Be careful about posting sensitive information? Also sounds like good advice. Stay off those sites? Probably really good advice for some people as well. Good advice, but not church doctrine.

I certainly wasn't implying that his advice was requisite for anybody out of his jurisdiction. Despite what I may feel about his advice, I'm going to mostly follow it, aside from a couple of obligations I have on facebook, like the SKC group which I'm the admin for.
