    (repeat from boards.swingutah.com)

    So, I'm trying to make this DVD/SVCD/whatever of classic dance clips, but currently I can't burn .avi or .mpg. Supposedly I can if I buy this thing:

    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/DVD_Video_Plug_In.html

    DVD-Video Plug-in –

    Our multifunction plug-in connects you to the world of DVD

    Downloadable Serial Number:

    24.99 USD

    To be able to burn video files and play them on any DVD player, the data must be DVD compatible in the appropriate MPEG format.

    Encode your video files

    with the aid of the following components:

    * MPEG-2/DVD Encoder/Decoder

    * MPEG-2/SVCD Encoder/Decoder

    * Dolby® Digital (AC-3) 2.0 Encoder/Decoder

    Information

    The DVD-Video Plug-in is already available in the Nero 6 Ultra Edition Retail Package and in the web version. If you are using a previous version or an OEM version without this plug-in, you need at least Nero 6.0.0.9 and NeroVision Express.

    $25? Is this worth it? Hmm...

    If you have Linux, I believe mencoder will encode anything anyway you like it.

    If not, talk with me and we can probably come up with a solution.

    I love Linux... long live the Penguin! One of these years it is finally going to become user-friendly enough that it will seriously compete with M$ in the pc market. I personally find most major flavors very user friendly, and Linux is already making big headway in the business sector, so that day may not be far off.

    Yeah, it has grown and changed a lot over the years. I got assimilated with windows because I used to write and sell shareware. Try doing that on Linux. Not impossible, but not exactly easy either (the marketing, not the engineering obviously).

    I've always figured I'll be converted to the light some day. It's just a matter of when.

    The Linux development envrionment is so much richer. You have all sorts of down and dirt simple command line tools to help you learn languages and how to program. You also have the full IDE's like Eclipse and Anjuta, as well as the GTK's for full user space apps. One of these days when I'm not a high stress, heavy deadline student (next year), I'd like to get serious about contributing to projects and making contributions to the OSS world.

    My major and class decisions have been influenced by a desire to help solve the Linux driver problem, and I'm actually writing one for my Senior Project.

    Breaking Down Barriers to Linux Desktop Adoption

    http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/06/02/27/1930209.shtml

    One of the things they mention is OpenOffice, and how a lot of people don't like it because it lacks features. "So, in essence, they're saying they want desktops cluttered with unnecessary features." For me, it's not the features that keep me away, but instead it's a matter of how it feels when I use it. The last time I used OpenOffice it was slow (granted, it was a while ago). Face it, 99% of Java applications suck rocks for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I don't care if it's only 0.43 seconds slower than MS Office products for most tasks, it's still slower. I notice the difference and it drives me crazy. Also, the word to openoffice format conversion also sucked rocks.

    ...

    I'm downloading OpenOffice right now though just so I can see what 2.0 is like. Lest ye think I criticize without at least trying to know what I'm talking about.

    if it's going to be written in a slow, awkward language, it might as well be one that's cross platform.

    true. mozilla products do a good job at being cross platform with a less-awkward language. granted, there's probably a bit more work involved with the mozilla products to get them working on other platforms.

    anyway, trying out 2.0 right now. it's a lot better than 1.* that's for sure. They fixed my biggest annoyances. Guess I can swich to linux now. haha

    no, openoffice is not what's holding me back. my laziness is. i really just wanted to start more linux arguments.

    Linux is the bomb-diggity.

    oO2.0 has really improved. Also, you can make .pdfs for free! (Though you can also do it in Windows... but it's pretty crappy freeware) You can make it do whatever you want. At my work, we have linux servers doing everything from file servers, ldap, firewall (for a while whilst I figured out how to command line a cisco pix 515e) ssh gateway, proxy server, mail server, etc. The entire chemistry department basically runs off of linux.

    ubuntu's cake to install, comes with all sorts of built-in usability, and they'll send you a grip of cd's for free-ninety-nine.

    plus it has all the stability that the debian core's been so busy establishing.

    afaik, the current cool flavors are:

    1. fedora core - the red hat du jour.
    2. debian - great update/package system. pretty solid.
    3. suse - from our friends just down the street. the new one looks pretty keen. plus they have a cool logo.
    4. gentoo - way solid. customizable. you have to compile everything yourself. not for the faint of heart.
    5. ubuntu - apparently made by some socialist 'linux for the people' type group. we like it because it's shiny like windows. and because it's the official linux of Spain.
    6. knoppix - runs from a cd. it's pretty stinkin' amazing.

    I have mostly used Fedora Core and Suse. Those are the two that I have installed on my home computer and work computer right now anyway. (I don't even have a Windows install anymore, I just use VMware) I have heard good things about Ubuntu but have yet to try it. Debian is good. Knoppix is very handy for doing things that need to be done, but you don't want to screw up your current system.
